Jim found himself in a narrow hallway with unremarkable white doors lining both walls. These must be the back doors to the mall shops, he thought. He walked a distance down the hall, following a couple of turns along the way, until he reached some stairs. The fluorescent lights in the stairwell were flickering, so old they were about to burn out. Excited by the sense of exploring and adventure, he decided to forge ahead. Or downwards, depending on how you look at it.
The stairs switched back and forth a number of times until Jim was certain that he must have gone down more than a single floor. Yet, strangely, there had been no doors at any of the landings he had passed. He hesitated, then steeled himself and headed farther down. Soon, he reached a section of the stairway that had been plunged into complete darkness. By this point, Jim figured he must be far beneath the mall above, and his earlier bravado had completely left him. Nervously, carefully, he continued, taking one step at a time. He could now see nothing.
Suddenly, he ran into something that felt like a wall. Feeling around, he found a doorknob and slowly turned it, opening the attached door slightly. Peeking into the space beyond, he saw
