The First Guests Arrive

Just then the doorbell rang. "Oh shit!" Sharon exclaimed. "Surely my guests can't be starting to arrive already?" But when she looked at her watch, she found that it was much later than she had thought. "I've no time to change now," she told Jim. "I'll have to stay like this." With that she went to answer the door.

Standing on the doorstep were a young married couple who were friends of hers, Ted and Alice. "Sorry we're a bit early," Alice said. "Happy birth... Sharon, is that really you?"

"Yes, it's really me," Sharon said, feeling rather self-conscious in her outrageous outfit.

"But you look so young!" Alice exclaimed.

"And your br..." Ted broke off as Alice elbowed him sharply in the ribs.

"You didn't tell us that it would be fancy dress, Sharon," Alice said.

"Well, it wasn't supposed to be, but I thought that it would be rather fun to wear this outfit that Jim bought me for my birthday," Sharon replied. "Come in. Let me get you both drinks."

1. It's an elegant dinner party for half a dozen close friends. Or at least, that was the plan, though Sharon's costume doesn't really go with elegance.
2. It's a party for fifty, with music, dancing and lots of alcohol.
3. Alice has bought Sharon a pair of earrings as a present. Strangely enough, she got them at the same store where Jim bought the schoolgirl outfit, though that doesn't emerge until after Sharon has put them on.
4. Something else.
