Going back to the waters around Cuba wasn't an option for her, though, however unpleasant the CSA might prove to be, as back there seemed certain to be where the Men in Gray's search for her would be centred.
Sharon had already decided that with the light beginning to fail it was time to rest. However, in the open sea, with deep water below her, it wasn't obvious where she could find somewhere safe to spend the night. It would already be too dark beneath the surface for her to see much, even had there been much chance of an underwater search throwing up anything. If the worst came to the worst, she would have to sleep on the surface. She knew from her time unconscious that she would not sink. And few marine creatures would bother anything her size.
Then Sharon had second thoughts. Having spent several hours unconscious earlier in the day, she didn't feel tired. And mightn't it be better to travel by night and rest by day? That way, if the MiG were to use spotter planes, their chances of finding her would be minimised. In the end, she decided:
