Sharon had now [50987] got the evidence that the Leviathan was, as had been suspected, an item of chronally illicit technology [30464], but how she could hope to destroy it was another matter. She had jettisoned some of her gear [30609], and her captors had taken the rest. Was Jim going to show up in the minisub [27819]? If he did, now she no longer had the radio, how could he contact her?
When she was offered the chance to act as scout, she naturally accepted. At leasr that might present her with the opportunity to do something, maybe lead the sub aground before it got close enough to Hamburg to use its EMP weapons. She was given a wristband with a transponder attached, so that she could be tracked. (If the sub's sonar had been good enough to track her without any such assistance, then it would have been good enough for her help as a scout not to have been necessary.)
She, the captain and the navigator examined a chart of the area. The navigator indicated to Sharon the general route that he wanted to follow. She would lead them along it, making minor detours at her discretion to avoid any underwater obstructions and to keep to the deeper channels. (Apparently, the bottom depths shown on the chart were not 100% reliable.)
