Jim hurried through the mall, not entirely able to shake the feeling that he was doing something wrong by wearing female clothes despite now being to all eyes a little girl. Even though everyone who turned to him smiled at the overloaded girl toting her enormous bag, he still felt as if somehow he'd be discovered. That some slip of his stride or expression would scream 'adult man' and everyone would know.
His blonde tails streamed behind him as he ran through the mall parking lot to the bus stop, sure he wouldn't catch the bus that was pulling away. It stopped and to his amazement backed up, the bus driver beaming benevolently down at him. "No charge, young lady." He said, pointing to the fare chart which clearly stated that children under ten rode free. Jim could get used to this!
Emboldened, he put his bag on the seat next to him and sat down, giggling softly at being impolite at taking two seats and knowing no one would mind. The seat was cold and a moment later, he got up and smoothed his skirt down, trying to pretend to the bus that he hadn't made the mistake. An older woman nodded her approval and he pretended not to see her, fearing she would bring further attention to his lack of ladylike awareness despite his age.
His reverie was broken by a high voice piping, "Can I have that seat?" A little boy was standing in the aisle, almost falling every time the bus moved. Jim put the bag on the floor and the boy climbed up next to him. "Hi, I'm Henry."
"I'm J-ane." Jim said, stammering at the name.
"I like your shirt." The boy told him.
"Thank you. I really love the Powerpuff Girls." Jim said. The boy warmed to him and to Jim's surprise he enjoyed the simple conversation he was having. When the bus reached his stop he:
