Already late and somewhat annoyed, Lindsay wrapped herself in a towel and opened her dorm room door. Outside, in the common corridor of her residence was a Federal Express courier.
"Package for Lindsay Equis," the courier said, then looking at her dressed in towels, with her legs already wet from the shower, he added, "sorry to trouble you ma'am."
"Fine," she said, somewhat exasperated, "where do I sign?"
A few moments later, Lindsay was standing alone in her dorm room with a rather large box. Figuring she was already late, she decided it wouldn't hurt to take a peak at the contents.
The attached card, much to her disappointment, was from her stepfather (who was now living separately from her mother -- "a trial separation" they had said -- but Lindsay knew better). The card read "Happy BELated Birthday" and included a short note from her stepdad saying that he really hoped they could stay in touch no matter what became of his relationship with Lindsay's mom. "Yeah right," she thought, noting that her birthday had been nearly six weeks ago.
Inside the package was a cosmetics kit, just like one of the Amway kits but with everything branded as a product by BEAmway. God, thought Lindsay, a cheap knockoff of a pyramid scheme makeup kit.
Examining the kit further, she had to admit, judging by the quality of the accessories and makeup, that the kit might have been better-packaged as a Versace knockoff.
