"I'm really a ghost," Sharon stated.
"A ghost." Jim poked at her. "You sure feel solid to me," he began stroking her arm.
"Stop that," she slapped his hand away. "I'm trying to be serious, here."
"All right. Serious." Jim unsuccessfully tried to paste a serious, no-nonsense look on his face."
Sharon narrowed her eyes. "I meant it. I AM a ghost. Well, maybe not exactly a ghost. Something more like a spirit, who is inhabiting this body. Permanently."
"Riiight," Jim replied none too believingly.
"Remember when I told you that I had been in a car accident when I was little? I was in a coma for something like a week due to head injuries."
Jim sat up remembering the time she told him about the accident. She had only spoken of it once and refused to talk about it again after that. Sharon's mother had been driving, to somewhere mundane like a grocery store, when a drunk driver plowed into the passenger side of their vehicle. While her mother had escaped relatively uninjured, Sharon had been seriously injured and pinned for an hour while she had to be cut out of the car. The other driver had been killed instantly. "Yeah," he replied.
Sharon took a deep breath. "Well," she began nervously. "She, I, died." She paused to wait for Jim's reaction. When she got none, she continued. "Brain dead, but her parents kept her on life support hoping for a miracle. When I came onto the scene, that girl was gone and I saw an opening position for a daughter, so I jumped in. I don't remember much of my life before. But I do remember..."
