Jim and Rick stood outside the house where there was almost definitely a party going on inside. There was pretty loud music. All the windows had shades, but the lights were on and you could see signs of people walking around.
This was a part of Shadow Peak they didn't know too well. It wasn't too far from a college.
Rick had overheard the news about the party from Kevin Zeffram, who had said that the house was full of foriegn exchange students.
"Like, there's no drinking age in most of Europe" said Rick. "And because they're in a foreign land, ours, they're going to be really horny. And maybe one of them will want to go to the prom with one of us. Imagine taking a hot French twenty-year-old to the prom!"
It all seemed pretty far fetched to Jim, but he felt it was best not to argue. He didn't really want to be here, but Rick had talked him into it. And now they were just hanging outside the door trying to get the courage to knock. Jim knew that Rick was going to ask him to do it, but Jim was ready to deflect.
Jim had lifted a bottle of wine from his parent's wine rack. He didn't know if it was a good bottle or a bad one, but he had it. So they weren't empty handed.
Rick was about to say something when the front door opened. A tallish woman peered out at Rick and Jim.
"Hi!" said Rick. "We're friends of Kevin. We heard about the party."
The woman stared at them without saying anything. Jim couldn't really see her face, she was in shadow from the lights coming from inside the house. The way she stood, Jim wondered if she was high. But then, she probably just didn't speak English.
She opened the door wider and stepped back.
"Thank you!" said Rick, who took it as an invitation and walked up without waiting for Jim.
Jim, lagged behind, thinking he would present the bottle to the girl. Up close, he could see she was kind of statuesque: she was taller than Jim, might have been about six foot two. She was wearing a tight tunic that made Jim wonder if this was a toga party. She had bright green eyes, but her pupils were huge as if she was in the dark.
She's high Jim thought. The last time he'd seen pupils like that was when he and Rick had come across some k1ds who'd eaten mushrooms and were hanging out at the bleachers watching football practice as if it was the Three Stooges.
She didn't even look at the bottle. She just looked at Jim. It was a little unsettling.
Jim walked inside, looking for Rick. All he saw were girls.
