Lizzie wasn't particularly pleased about leaving Dabbler with Anna Jaeger. She had the sneaking suspicion Anna had designs on her companion, and their mission was too important to be disrupted by fun and games. But one didn't argue with an Author—certainly not one as powerful (and erratic) as Anna Jaeger.
Lizzie made a sour face as left the Jaeger suite. Not only had they not gained the reinforcements they had hoped for, but rescuing Anna herself seemed to be proving more trouble than it had been worth. Should I write off this sidetrip and return to D.J., or should I try to find someone else who might help? Lizzie wondered, hesitating. She considered. D.J. and Meiou were apparently all right, for the present, and probably would be until she and Dabbler rejoined them. And they really needed more firepower...
The dragon girl decided. She poofed herself back to the Troubleshooters' Office to make some phone calls via the Inter-Authorial Network.
Fifteen minutes later, she put D.J.'s palantir away. She could almost have screamed in frustration. Everyone who might help was out, busy, preoccupied with their own AddVentures, or unwilling to help. Swallowing her pride, she had even finally called JigSaw, but all she got from him were crude proposals which she indignantly rejected. It was hopeless...
Or was it? She had been calling Avatars. She was forgetting that there were plenty of powerful Characters out there as well, and some of them were good friends. Of course, most of them weren't on the Inter-Authorial Network, and who knew if their powers would avail against Vamps—but then, whose powers would avail against Vamps? Even those of Avatars? They might have the ability, but one look at a Vamp and they lost the inclination...
Lizzie thought long and hard. Then she got out the palantir again and contacted Sid Russell. She told him the problem, and asked if he could spare Mirage.
