"...the Ring itself," Crimson finished with a smirk.
"I knew there was something about it," Calla said, not realizing the feeling was coming from the part of her so deeply buried to avoid the spell Meghan had put on her. "I... don't know how I knew," she continued puzzled.
"The ring isn't alive, but it has some sort of relationship with Meghan, different from its former bearers," Crimson continued. "If they tried that, the Ring would make sure they failed, or at least that it was useless to anyone else."
"I've heard a lot of talk of 'they,'" Jim said. "Who are they? I've had hints, even a supernatural visit, but I'm getting damn tired of all the mystery and loose ends."
"I'm not about to say right now," Crimson grinned. "It's just not the best time yet!"
"That makes about sense as any else that's going on," Andy grumbled.
"Now, now," Crimson chided. "Patience. If you don't learn something the hard way, do you really learn it?"
"Meghan likes to learn things the easy way," he muttered.
"Well that's not going to work this time," Crimson replied. "This lesson is too big to learn that way."
"So what can we do?" Calla asked. "I mean if we shouldn't go after Monica."
"What you've been doing, trying to help her. That protection from reality shifts will be pretty useful but maybe it's time you took a more... proactice role."
"What do you mean?" Jim asked.
"I mean... well Ryodjin should know what I mean."
"Okay I--hey where'd he go?" Andy wondered looking around. It was true, the mysterious researcher was gone."
"Did he go after Monica?" Calla wondered.
"Lindsay's gone," Jim said, looking at one of the security cameras. "Do you think he took her?"
"Hmm," Crimson said suddenly starting. "I think I need to get going now."
"What where are--" Jim began.
"Just remember, it really is Meghan's Ring."
