Before coming to threshold, Ami had been an 'exam ace', and had been the bright star of her school's academic program. Everyone had been certain that she would become some sort of brilliant mind that could be pointed at by later generations of the possibilities and success of the program's functions. Many people thought that she would become a doctor in at least one field, and were expecting papers written by her to be published in the academic journals of her chosen focus.
Instead, going through threshold had put a stop to any future college dreams, and put her on the firm path to being some nameless tamer's water type.
However, due to a combination of factors, she was getting a 'renovation' of sorts. Instead of being a mere regular water type, she was getting some changes that would make her special. Her body got longer, and sleeker, with her tail becoming more agile than before. Her ears became pointed, and her coloring changed. But more important than the appearance alterations was what she was now.
Ami was now an Espeon, complete with psychic powers, which would fit her keen intellect, and would serve her Tamer very well. However, she was also going to have a cold attack, which would do well in helping her fight. Combined, they would make her a good part of Ash's 'arsenal'.
As the changes took hold and stabilized, it turned out that the earlier mishap was going to have some benefits for those involved.
