He waited till they manage to use their hooves to climb the wooden ladder to the loft and hid into the loose bales of hay then headed out with his cocked double barrel shotgun to some shooting "its show time Emma, just keep a place open for your Jethro! Who might be calling on your and being staying for a spell?"

1. Jed, somehow manages to run them off, but they came back later, with more people
2. Jed had to sweet talk his way out of it, being their were more then he can handle
