It was a basic principle of mad science that everything began with radiation. Radiation could transform turtles into ninjas. It could turn simple houseplants into man-eating monstrosities. Life itself was a by-product of cosmic rays striking pools of inorganic acids.

Sure, his own irradiomatrix was a patchwork of cathode ray tubes and x-ray parts he'd picked up at a junkyard, but considering he'd built it from scratch on a budget of nothing, it was the finest possible equipment. All he had to do was place the uniform in the circle he'd painted on his laboratory floor, and throw the dramatically over-sized activation switch, and he'd be rolling in fantastic scientific data!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Laughing maniacally as any mad scientist should, he threw the switch. His lab filled immediately with sounds of buzzing and crackling, and the smell of ozone.

Which was basically the only way he knew it was working, since his observation equipment, having a budget much like the irradiomatrix itself, was pretty much just his own eyes.

After about a minute of senseless revelry, he decided that should be enough and turned the machine off. He walked over to the irradiated uniform to pick it up, then suddenly felt dizzy. No, not just dizzy, it was like the whole room was getting larger and warmer at the same time.

It should probably be mentioned that his safety equipment was built from the same budget as his other equipment and consisted of nothing.

In any case, he had got himself some serious vertigo from whatever had just happened. Fortunately, he had the irradiomatrix to lean against. Even considering the budget, he really had to pride himself on the fact that it was a solid piece of engineering. After all, he was able to hold onto it for dear life while the entire room felt like it was swirling around him.

That didn't keep him from falling over, however. And it certainly didn't help that as he was collapsing to the floor, he grabbed and accidentally flipped the switch to turn it back on.

Jamie woke up on the floor of her lab a while later. The irradiomatrix was quite, and smelled kind of like burnt wiring. But never mind that, she'd fallen asleep with it running! Who could imagine what kind of horrible mutant she might have turned into? Seized by the horror of the situation, she ran upstairs to the bathroom to get a look at herself in the mirror.

Only to find that she looked just like herself. The radiation hadn't wrinkled her skin, or melted the soft flesh from her hands and face, or made so much as a blotch on her ample breasts. Even her school uniform that she'd been wearing didn't look so much as dirty.

It had given her one hell of a tan, though. Like, she could spend all week at the beach and not get a tan this good. She realized a moment later that she didn't have any tan lines either. She'd been tanned evenly all over her body, straight through her clothes. It was so sexy, just looking at herself in the mirror was turning her on.

Which was weird as hell, but in terms of mad science it was an unqualified success.

She was interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Jim? Get out of there, I need to pee!"

It was her sister, Edith. Apparently she thought it was her boyfriend in the bathroom or something.

"It's unlocked. Come on in!"

Edith opened the door and the twelve year-old's mouth fell open in shock.

"Isn't this the sweetest tan?"

"You're not Jim... who the heck are you?"

"Your sister, dummy! It turns out my irradiomatrix has the side effect of giving you a killer tan!"

"I don't know what you're talking about! I have a brother, not a sister! And he- he..."

Edith swayed on her feet. Come to think of it, she was looking kind of tired. Fortunately, Jamie was able to get to her before she passed out.

"Whoa, easy there. Big sis has gotcha."

Then the strangest thing happened. While Jamie held her little sister's limp form in her arms, Edith's body began changing. She got a little taller, her skin tanned all over to a dark bronze tone, and her breasts grew until they were about as big as Jamie's.

A moment later, she stirred.

"You okay, sis?"

"I think so? What just happened, Jamie?"

She helped Edith to her feet and looked her over. They weren't identical twins. They had different faces, and slightly different builds despite being the same age. None of that had changed. Even Edith's school uniform was in perfect condition.

"I guess this tan is contagious."

"What?" Edith jumped up and looked at herself in the mirror. "Wow, this really is a nice tan! I don't think I've ever looked so sexy!"

"Yeah, me neither. I even feel sexy! So, wanna celebrate?"
