“Doesn't sound like a problem to me. As long it's something you want, who cares how fast it's happening. With good things, the quicker the better, right?” Josh tried to reassure her and quietly hoped she wouldn't think too hard about the speed of the changes. Caley seemed relieved that he wasn't weirded out by her changes and was apparently focusing on the positives.
“So you don't think I'm a freak?” She asked quietly.
“Never,” was all he said. That was enough for him, but apparently not for her.
“So you do or don't like the changes I'm going through?” Caley probed. “Because you asked me out when I was 4'9”, flat as a pancake and covered in acne.” Josh gave a theatrical sigh, then grinned.
“I won't lie, I like big boobs, long hair and a beautiful smile as much as any guy, but that's not all there is to a girl. Like I said, Mandy's pretty good to look at, but I wouldn't want to date her. The same with Vanessa Barnes. She's got a body any guy would dream about but anyone who actually dated her would probably spend his life apologizing to the rest of the world for what a bitch she is …or at least I would.” Josh realized he was ranting but couldn't stop himself. “Could you imagine taking her to a restaurant? You'd probably be hypnotized by her cleavage right up to the moment she slapped the waiter and dragged half the kitchen staff out to explain why her salad wasn't quite crisp enough.” Caley burst out laughing tears streaming down her face for several minutes. He was blushing madly by the time she regained control. Despite everything she'd said he felt like he was the one who'd bared his soul a bit too much.
“Ok, I think I get where you're coming from.” She said with a smile. “But just to be clear, you'll still like me if I end up getting a few curves, right?”
“The curvier the better, so long as it's still you underneath,” he replied. “Stay the same sweet, funny, nerdy girl you've always been and I'll be with you until the end.” She looked at him, wide-eyed.
“You really mean that, don't you,” she said slowly.
“Um, yeah, why not?” he asked. Josh was suddenly self-conscious, but then he decided to just run with it. “You know what, let's show pop-culture who's boss! You've got your sudden growth spurt, I'll hit the gym and pretty soon we'll be the sexiest pair in school. Then we'll be at the top of the ladder and we'll get to decide how popular kids behave and see if we can't make high school a bit less painful and intimidating for everyone,” he finished on a high, only to see Caley staring at him.
“That's a pipe dream. I'd have to be bustier and more beautiful than Vanessa Barnes to pull that off.”
“What's the matter, don't think you can take her?” Josh goaded her playfully. She mock scowled at him.
“Alright, you're on! But if I'm going to become head cheerleader and take on the queen bee, guess who's trying out for quarterback?” She grinned evilly at him. Josh grinned back, happy to see her so animated after the intense life story he'd just heard.
“No problem, you just watch!” he held up one hand for a high five which Caley slapped forcefully before the two of them fell about laughing.
