WR Haruhi: Kyon gets a wishing rock.

Unending BE - episode 738226

I trudged up the road to school one dreary morning, pondering precisely what fate awaited me on arrival. What sort of unimaginable fate had Haruhi dreamed up for us to take part in this day? It could have been anything, honestly. That was part of the trouble with the word "unimaginable". It covered things that an ordinary person, by definition, could not even think of. Trying to predict her was like predicting a brewing storm. You knew it would get bad, but just how bad and in which way the wind would blow could only be discovered by riding it out through to the end.

My musings were interrupted by a soft glow, just outside of my peripheral vision. I'd begun to pay attention to that region of my sight a great deal more lately; Who knew what lurked just outside the field of sight? I turned to it, and found a small innocuous looking rock lying there on the pavement periodically glowing a bright green colour. I glanced around for signs of why it should be there, why it should glow... and found nothing. I tested for temperature by placing my hand cautiously near it, before picking it up for a closer look. No warmth. It felt like a perfectly ordinary rock, and aside from the previously mentioned glow it looked like one as well. Quite the conundrum.

I could have simply left it there and that would have been an end to the matter... but I knew differently. If this were (as I strongly suspected) some form of unusual event that would cause Haruhi to bounce around like a maniac should she ever discover it, then even if I did choose to ignore it here and now it would find some other way to intrude on my life. Better that I took it with me, kept it well hidden from Haruhi and showed it to... well, any of them may know something about it quite frankly, but my best bet was to start with Yuki. But above all else, keep it hidden from Haruhi. That was an important enough thought it bore repeating.

The rock was pocketed with great care and I checked to ensure the glow did not show through the material - it did not, mercifully and nor did the shape of the thing as it sat there. Satisfied that it remained out of sight, I continued on my way to school.

And then, by the time I got there and sat down, I had completely forgotten about the strange rock sitting in my pocket.

I'm not entirely certain what it was about today, but class seemed especially dull and lifeless. Of course, if I was suffering then I could only imagine what Haruhi was going through... oh dear, she seemed to be falling asleep right in front of me. I carefully jabbed her with my pencil, and she shot me a look that warned of something worse than death later, when the opportunity arose. I sighed, wearily and returned to my work frustrated that I had to deal with such a tempramental goddess.

At the time I had no idea, but soon enough there would be some significant alterations to our relationship.

I dreaded those final moments before the bell rang. I just knew that somehow, some way, Haruhi was going to invent some particularly malicious and devious "revenge" for waking her up earlier. Each tick of the clock made it feel more and more as though a noose were tightening around my neck, slowly and carefully choking the very life out of me...

The bell rang. My collar was seized angrily and I felt myself dragged outside of the classroom at impossible speed towards the club room. I was forced inside, by a clearly irate Haruhi, who suddenly changed her expression from blatantly malevolant intent to poorly disguised malevolant intent.

"Kyon! I have a very important mission for you. If you paid any attention to the gossip, you might've heard people talk about a strange flash in the sky last night. This could be our big discovery! I want you to head to the area people say it happened, see if you can find anything. I'll be in touch, see ya later!"

Truth be told, I had been paying attention to the things people had been saying in school today. None of them had been talking about any strange lights in the sky. But far from it for me to call Haruhi Suzumiya a liar - to her face. I got what she was up to. She was heading me out on a snipe hunt, and if I refused... she'd think of something nastier and meaner to do to me. Or worse yet, her mood would sour and bad things would seemingly happen to me of their own accord.

That in mind, I simply nodded and went to the location she specified.

I should have been surprised to find that she had sent me to the place I had earlier located a strange glowing rock. I should have been surprised at the coincidence, wondered for a moment if maybe she had placed it there to play with my mind. I knew better. Somehow, this all seemed so perfectly Haruhi.

My hands struck into my pockets, fingering the strange rock that I had completely forgotten to give to Yuki. I resolved to hand it over to her, and report that there was nothing out of the ordinary to Haruhi tomorrow. Weary of the head games and the misadventures... Acting as though a court jester on the pain of death if his master stops laughing for more than a minute. I took the rock out of my pocket, held it before my eyes and uttered a sentence that changed my life in ways I could not have possibly imagined.

"I wish..."

  1. *"... I was enough of a man to deal with Haruhi."
  2. *"... I had more control over my life."
  3. *"... Haruhi was nicer to me."
  4. Something Else
