Your explanations were a bit confusing, sir, especially for the Die of Change. They have to roll for all their attributes, and once they use it, they have to roll for most things that happen in a day? Is that what you mean? Actually, the Arch of Tabula Rasa was also rather confusing. But they're all interesting ideas!

Here's how the dice work. You can roll it to do something like convince a girl to have sex with you, or run a 6 minute mile. You can also change things like enlarge women's breasts, make people forget things, even bring people back from the dead.

You only have to re-roll your stats after you realize the Die is allowing you to do all of these things.

The more you roll the dice the more you have to roll it. For example someone who has only used the dice a dozen times would have to roll it before doing something challenging even if they didn't want to. While someone who's used the dice hundreds of times have to roll it to do anything beyond the automatic functions of their body.

This was inspired by table top games so I decided to go a little crazy with it.

I'll explain the arch later I need to go to class.

Well, that's definitely a little different from how I interpreted it, but that's probably more interesting. The more you use it, are you then, like, *compelled* to use it? What happens if you lose possession of it? As for your stats, can they still be changed by other influences later, or even just by day-to-day life as your "experience" increases. Stat rolls have always made me nervous. Thanks for explaining.

Crazy Diamond
Mon Jan 23 16:46:17 2012

At first you simply compelled to use it but eventually it starts rolling by itself when ever you do something.

Your stats can change over time but you can also re-roll them again with the dice but this makes the die's influence grow faster. Just beware of low rolls they can really fuck you up depending on what you were trying to do.

About getting rid of it well this can be very easy of very hard. If you haven't over used it you can just gently set it down and walk away, you can roll to lose it but if you roll a 1 of that you have it for life and the die can make you fail at dying. The last way is for someone to catch mid roll before it hits a surface this can trade it away to who caught it easily. Also you can just give it to someone but will go through withdrawal for the die.

Of course the Die could lead to your Character Sheet in even more powerful item.

Intriguing. I think the Die of Change and the Ring of Lies are the most exciting of these, but all of them offer interesting possibilities.

Adama thank you very much. I mean this is really nice that you did this for these ideas I've been spewing out for the last few years.

Adama
Mon Jun 24 17:28:12 2013

You're welcome. It's a popular thread for restarts.

I was originally working on putting all the items in the episode itself, but it was getting to be too huge. You can see the mostly-complete version of that here.

Adama
Sun Jun 30 00:13:17 2013

It's been suggested that new options on "new" list episodes like this should show up on the Recent Episodes lists, so I'm going to work on that.

Silenteye
Sun Jun 30 15:16:15 2013

One question Adama is this your attempt to reign in the list episodes?

Adama
Sun Jun 30 16:10:43 2013

On one level, yes.

On another level, I've often thought it would be nice for people to be able to add options to normal episodes too, in cases where they've thought of something that the original writer didn't, and there isn't a Something Else option. Some other sites like CYOC allow that. On the other hand, that's an idea that's been suggested before and some people haven't liked it.

Adama
Sun Jun 30 16:18:50 2013

I suppose we need a different system for regular list episodes -- a system where you're not allowed to add an option unless you also write an episode for that option.

Although it seems like there are times when you'd want to just be able to add options. Like when you have more than 6 ideas for continuations.

Can we get a button at the top of the page that'll send us to the bottom of the page as it's getting rather lengthy.

Also, on a completely different tact, why do all these interesting story ideas start of with endless links to anime options?

Sun Jan 26 23:48:17 2014

The abundance of anime start options are a result of how there's basically nobody here willing to do anything that isn't anime. And for nearly all of them, it'd be faster and easier to just replace the word "Anime" with "Ranma."

As for why we have so many items that give split options but never go beyond them, it's because everyone is fishing to see if anyone else is even remotely interested in their item idea, but nobody other than the person that created the item cares about the item idea. I've added several items here that never went anywhere for that reason. The most recent one I tried to start is Hot Tub Trap. That came from a vague idea of the Bleach women in that situation, getting uncomfortable and agitated that what used to be a relaxing getaway has turned on them with no escape.

Mon Jan 27 00:42:35 2014

Looking at Sunday’s episodes, exactly one third of them were anime related. That means there were twice as many episodes that had nothing to do with anime. And almost every Item of Power starts with a world split that would allow you to use it in any type of setting you want. So if you feel there aren’t enough non-anime episodes, Write. Some. More. Don’t just complain about it.

Mon Jan 27 01:11:02 2014

The "write some more" advice loses its power when it leads to enough cases where you're the only one writing. There's no point in starting up anything with much substance on an addventure if the addventure has proven repeatedly that anime (well, only a very small set of anime series) and original characters are the only things that have participants.

I'm not saying anyone's not allowed to write anime episodes, the point is that there's no real variety. Yeah, exactly one third of Sunday's episodes are anime related. There's TV shows, films, cartoons, books, comic books, video games, mythology, celebrities, historical figures, and yet in spite of all those options, anime took up a whole third of the addventure on a Sunday. I'd think if someone tried enough times to start something different and none of their efforts ever led to anything, it's no longer "just complaining about it."

Before you mention that there was a handful of DC/Marvel episodes for Sunday, those are atypical, and often are based on or heavily involve the anime-inspired Teen Titans cartoon.

Tue Jan 28 21:17:58 2014

I'm sorry if it sounds hollow to you, but it's basically what you need to do. Write more. That's how you attract more writers whose interest match yours. Or you go and recruit them elsewhere. Or you find a community more suited to your tastes and hang out there instead.

You are not going to change anyone's tastes by ranting about how we're all having badwrongfun by writing more of what we like than what you like. And it makes you sound like a tool.

Cross C
Wed Jan 29 00:36:25 2014

What do you want to write substantively about?

I think the fetish is more important than which fiction's characters you prefer to write about. I'm generally willing to do some research to write characters I don't know if its a fetish I like and the other author puts a certain level of effort into their episodes.

I'd never seen the Ranma anime or read the manga before I worked on most of my Ranma episodes.

That man!
Wed Jan 29 20:15:25 2014

I generally appraise things by fetish/"fetish," myself. If I know enough about the setting and characters, it doesn't matter all that much what they are or where they're from if my interest in a theme and/or plot piques my interest.

But, sometimes it's just not meant to be. For instance, bimbos seem to be a common theme these days, but I'm not interested in the kind that are characterized by nymphomania, mental retardation, and seem to have an unnatural production of nitrous oxide within their bodies (at least, I don't know how else to explain their incessant silliness and giggling).

Sometimes I write outside of my own interests, for one reason or another, but I get motivated/inspired by things that interest me more often. Hardly anyone seems interested in what I'm interested in, but the only way I could find that out for certain was to write something. Sometimes that's the only way to know if anything you like catches some wind, because someone has to raise the sail first. I was surprised by the result of at least one of the things I started, so who knows?

At least, you can't always expect the things that you like to fall onto your lap without putting any effort into it yourself. That's what I think, anyway. It's especially relevant if the place you're looking in doesn't focus on a particular interest of yours in the first place. In a place like the BEA, though, it could just be a matter of being present at the right time, since authors come and go with all sorts of interests in mind, aside from breast expansion.

And all that jazz. A bunch of words just randomly decided to spew forth from my gob. You're welcome to ignore this, or do something that involves a combination of fire and death. And possibly s'mores.

Had an idea for the Groundhog's Day Alarm clock, but it does require slightly altering how it works.

The change: There actually is a very slight difference to each day independent of the user's actions. Namely, each loop becomes a shade more perverted than the last.

Would anyone have a problem with that alteration before I write this idea up?

tuatara
Sat Feb 8 00:33:32 2014

Well, if you included an option that allowed for adhering to the original wording, I don’t know why there would be any reason to object. (Of course, I didn’t come up with the item.)

I wouldn't mind it at all. Though I'd personally prefer it if the ramped up perversity was at least in line with the 'owner's preferences, even if it's the ones they don't admit to anyone else. That's probably because I prefer wish fulfillment stories to torture tales though.

Just to be clear, I did NOT write the HA Opposite Sex Cloner entry. But it does look like someone forgot the line break tags. I can relate because I've made that goof more than once.

Oh, and while it is a clever entry, allowing it to make hetero clones of gays does make HA appear a bit sloppy. (no pun intended) It seems OOC to me for a super-villainous (by the standards of the worlds they're perverting) organization capable of infiltrating the multi...

Everyone's eyes have already glazed over, haven't they? Oh, well.

Would it be possible to split it into pieces and/or add an index?

Adama
Wed Sep 3 17:36:03 2014

Yeah, both of those are possible. They would have to be created and updated by hand (by me), unless I want to go to the effort of figuring out how to make the software generate the splits/index automatically.

Well there is a "go to bottom of page" link already at the top of the page.

That man!
Thu Sep 4 07:33:52 2014

Say, since the issue is mainly one of how much is being loaded on a single page, how about restricting how much of the page is loaded at one time? People can select sections to load, while the part that allows the addition of items remains outside of it, along with the latest items added. That way, after it's set up, you'd only need to add a new section once enough new items have been added.

Adama
Thu Sep 4 16:23:26 2014

My HTML coding skills are pretty primitive (I'm mainly a C / Java programmer). Anyone want to do the coding for that?

Though I've always tried to keep the HTML on this site very basic, so we can be compatible with any browser a user might have (for example, I've had users complain about <table> tags because their browsers don't handle them well...)

That man!
Thu Sep 4 20:51:42 2014

Tables aren't primitive enough? Or are too primitive? Wow.

Well, I'm fairly competent with HTML and CSS. I've dabbled a bit with Javascript, though that can be turned off by default and thus inconvenient some people even before compatibility becomes an issue.

If using frames is fine, that's what I'd recommend first. Each section would be its own individual page, and you simply click a link to load the selected page within the frame (by adding target="name of frame" after the URL, if I remember correctly). I haven't used frames in the longest time, but -- if using them is acceptable -- I can probably work something out. Though, if you'd rather do it yourself, figuring out how to set it up with frames should be fairly easy. All you need to know is how to make a single frame (or copy examples from the Internet) and then it's just using simple links that target the same frame.

Drake-Sextent
Thu Sep 4 21:22:13 2014

Well for varying content, setting up one more database for Things of power and displaying them with a bit of PHP scripting would offer a lot more options. An ultra simplified possibility would have a frame with all the options for display, and a button that would then reload the primary frame with one page recreated differently based on the options selected.

Not an expert at it by any stretch, but I have done some php coding and would certainly be willing to help.

Adama
Thu Sep 4 22:18:26 2014

- The complaining user was using an old browser for the Linux operating system (I forget the name - Opera maybe?) and it wasn't capable of displaying tables properly. This was several years ago.

- Drake, using PHP and a database sounds like an interesting idea, however it would have to be a database that did not require root access to install, since I don't have that. Things of Power would probably have to switch from being an Episode page like it is now to being a special Utility page that was accessed from some other URL (possibly a link on the Recents page).

- TM, I'm not sure how popular frames will be (those cause browser issues too), maybe that's something we'd have to put up as an "alternate view" of the ToP page. Also, keep in mind that any page you create will have to be capable of being updated programmatically as new options are added. The current software edits 826374.html, finds the "Add New Item" button and inserts the new block of text above it.

That man!
Thu Sep 4 23:33:12 2014

I can't speak for the viability of frames either, but it's the easiest and most likely to be compatible that I can think of (not that I know everything -- or even many things, for that matter).

As for updating pages: that won't be necessary. The form that handles making new items on the ToP page can stay and function right where it is, outside of the frame. The new items will appear outside of the frame and build up like usual. It's only when it's decided that there are too many items on the ToP page that they are moved to another page so they can be accessed through the frame.

An alternative view would be a good idea, at the very least so it doesn't change/interrupt what people are used to while its usefulness is in question, and so it can be tested to see if it should stay as an alternative or go.

I can put a mock-up of it on my site, to demonstrate how it would operate. It'd take me a few days, though, since I'm not entirely free of time.
