He knew why his toes did not protest his weight. He didn't have ten toes now. Instead, what he had was a split hoof at the end of what used to be each of his feet!
He began to say that this was impossible. He soon found out that claiming something was impossible didn't make it unhappen. (Like the time the patrol car "materialized" behind him looking like a beta test for Code 3 equipment. Thinking that that couldn't happen didn't make either the ticket or the fine go away.)
Sharon just stood there with her eyes getting big. "Jim, I'll stand by you and try to help you. I'm sorry this happened to you, but what would it have done to me?"
