The first thing Rick did was to change himself back into a boy, his old self.
Rick then questioned the two girls, asking them about their pasts, trying to find any defect in their memory or difference between them, but he couldn’t. Neither of them could remember any trace of being Sharon, either.
Rick wracked his brains, trying to think of some way to tell them apart -- then he realized a way that he could do it.
He turned to the two girls and asked them, “When you first saw your double, was she on your left or your right?” They weren’t sure, so the three of them acted out their actions after the transformation, until the two girls were sure where they had been standing.
Then Rick said, “Okay -- I remember that Jim was on my right, and Sharon was standing to the left. So that means that you,” he said, pointing to the Jim on the right, “are the real Jim.”
The Jim on the right smiled in relief. The Jim on the left started to object, but then realizing the logic of the situation (and Jim was the logical type), started to wonder if she was really who she thought she was. Being currently the wrong gender (female) wasn’t helping things, either.
“Are you sure I was standing on your right?” the Jim on the left said. But Rick was firm. Even if he was wrong, he told himself, it was better to make some decision. And he was fairly sure, anyway.
Rick gripped the wand -- and Jim and Sharon were back in their old bodies. Sharon looked confused, and said “What happened?? Wasn’t I just in the locker room?”
Jim said, suddenly worried, “Sharon, this is going to sound pretty strange... but, uh, are you still gay?”
“What?!? You better know me better than that -- I’m not gay, and I never have been. What’s wrong with you?”
“Oh, never mind.” Jim said.
