As if on cue, a loud drunken voice rose up from the gate to the backyard. "Okay, you boring people," it shouted, "now the real party can begin!"
Jim and Sharon both turned to look. "Oh, shit," Jim huffed, as he saw his ex-girlfriend Robyn coming into the yard. It took her only a second to spot the two of them and come over.
"Well, hello there, you two," she said with a drunken slur. "When I saw all the cars out front, I wondered why so many people would be at your parents' house, dear. And then I remembered that it was your birthday, Jimbo, and just knew that meant a party. Hope you don't mind my stopping by for a bit."
Jim started to say something, but Sharon's hand on his arm stopped. "Not at all, Robyn," she said in a forced tone of friendliness. "In fact, I was going to call and invite you myself."
Robyn blew out a beer-soaked breath. "I'm sure you were," she said doubtfully. "Well, where's the refreshments. I need something to drink." She wandered off, swaying back and forth on rubbery legs.
"Can you believe that bitch," Jim said, after she was out of earshot. "Look at her. She's high as a kite. I don't know what I ever saw in her."
"Well, I think two things stick out," Sharon smiled at her lover.
Jim smiled back. "I guess you're right. But what are we going to do about her? She's going to ruin the party."
"Only if we let her," Sharon told him. "For now, she's just an annoyance. If she gets too out of hand, I'm sure between the two of us, we can find a way to, let's say, change her attitude."
Jim smiled, knowing what she meant.
For the next hour, Robyn made her way around the party, making a general nuisance of herself. But when she stumbled into the statue of Sharon's sister and almost knocked it over, Jim and Sharon decided it was time to do something about her.
