Harry Potter of course had Ginny Weasley as a girlfriend, not Hermione Granger. Harry actually wanted Hermione much more than he ever wanted Ginny, but not as a girlfriend.
Harry Potter wanted to BE Hermione Granger. He envied her her intelligence, her magical talents, her persistence — and her gender. He didn’t want to be The Boy Who Lived, but the brainy, talented girl with the intelligent pretty face and the slightly messy brown hair and the nice but not extraordinary female body... maybe this Hermione skinsuit could make a duplicate Hermione out of him, and with a Hermione brain she could find a way to make it permanent.
Harry set aside the change of school clothing in Hermione’s sizes, the satchel with duplicates of Hermione’s personal belongings, and what looked and felt in his grip like Hermione’s own wand but surely couldn’t be, any more than the Hermione skinsuit couldn’t be Hermione’s skin somehow looking alive without Hermione-innards and with a slit from chin nearly to crotch. He stripped and with almost impossible ease was soon inside the Hermione suit, shrunken to fit, zipping shut the slit with one purely Hermione hand. The changes completed, and not Harry Potter in a Hermione suit but an exact duplicate of Hermione Granger admired herself in the convenient full-length mirror. “I am Hermione Granger,” she told her reflection.
This Hermione clearly remembered having been Harry Potter, but memories of a lifetime as Hermione Granger were yet more clear. She knew so much more than she had as Harry, and her brain worked faster and better than his had. Also, Harry had stumbled onto these skinsuits, whereas she’d read about them! Making yourself permanently into the person represented by a suit you were wearing was an easy spell requiring little effort, just a suitable wand pointed at oneself and the simple spell “Verto tergum!” With that, she would go from being Harry Potter in a Hermione Granger skinsuit to being an exact copy of the original Hermione Granger in a Harry Potter skinsuit, which she could then remove and never wear again.
