Isold glared suspiciously at the dark-haired woman approaching her bed. The stranger looked normal enough; though her features marked her as foreign. “Where am I?” asked Isold, looking up at the window behind the bed.
“About fifty kilometers south of your cave— sorry, thirty-one miles? Two days’ travel?” The woman was slightly frustrated that Isold didn’t seem to recognize some of her words. “I’m Laura. You’re in my house.”
Isold looked at the room’s construction. The wedge shape of the room, the slant and the curve of the outer wall, suggested a dome that seemed large for a single occupant. “Do you live here alone?”
“I have two partners, they’re outside right now, but I can introduce you when they come back. I can take that out if you want.” Laura motioned at the IV tube. “Please trust me.”
“Why? I already know what you are and what you want, demon.” Isold yanked out the IV herself.
Laura frowned. “I’m trying to save your life, here.” She took a bandage out of the bedside cabinet and threw it into Isold’s lap. “You’re still sick. The treatment we gave you is temporary. There’s something else we can do, but we need your permission first.”
“You want to change me into one of you, and turn me against my people.” Isold scowled, inspecting the bandage suspiciously. Reluctantly, she dressed her wound.
“You’re being impossible, not to mention very rude. You haven’t even given me your name.” Laura let out an exasperated sigh.
