Her thought cut short as she noticed Danni’s face brightening with realization and her chest swelling as she took in a deep breath.
In a panic, Jamie lunged forward, clamping her hand over the redhead’s mouth. “Please, don’t scream my name,” she hissed into Danni’s ear. “I really don’t want people knowing who I am. I just want to enjoy myself for once without having to deal with awkward questions, okay?”
Danni blinked at her for a second before nodding. With a sigh, Jamie released her. Thankfully, Danni did lower her voice, but of course, she just had to know everything. So, Jamie spent the next few minutes filling her in.
“Well, at least you turned out hot,” Danni commented with a smile. “Welcome to the sexy side, girlfriend!”
Jamie scratched her head in embarrassment. “Thanks, but I’d rather not talk about this anymore. I’m just here to relax.” Desperate for some excuse to end the conversation, she saw Edith sitting on a towel by herself, texting. “Oh, looks like my sister has something to tell me. Gotta go.”
Ducking away from the others, Jamie plopped down on the towel next to Edith. “Hey, any update about Eddy?”
Edith shrugged, not looking up from her phone.
“What’s wrong? Is he still coming?”
“No, he’s coming,” Edith sighed. “It’s just that, do you think this was such a good idea?”
Jamie put an arm around her sister. “Having second thoughts?”
“Well, I know I wanted to double date, and it was really nice of you to let me come along, but…” Her eyes wandered over the gathered members of the Wet Dream Swim Team now lounging on their towels, chattering away. “I didn’t realize there’d be so many of you.”
Following her gaze, Jamie caught on. “Feeling intimidated?”
“I just figured it would be you and Joanie and us, y’know. But what’ll happen if Eddy shows up and doesn’t even notice me?”
Hearing the girl’s voice crack, Jamie drew her into an embrace. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m sure he wouldn’t do that to you. Look, if you want, the two of us can head over to the parking lot to meet him there. If he’s easily distracted, then I’ll leave you alone and meet back with you later. Sound good?”
Edith wiped her nose and gave her a smile. “Thanks, Jamie. You’re the best. Sorry for being such a downer.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jamie assured her. “Honestly, I’m feeling a bit over my head, too, especially wearing this bikini.”
“You!?” Edith eyed Jamie’s bikini. “But you’re, like, beyond sexy in that. I bet all the boys are…oh. Sorry, I forgot again.”
“No problem.” Jamie patted her on the back. “I actually kinda like the attention. But I also don’t like it. And…I guess I’m still confused about it.”
“I can imagine,” Edith giggled.
With that, the two of them got up and headed back up the sand. So much for relaxing, Jamie thought. Then again, she didn’t mind babysitting her sister if it meant spending time with her again. So, the two of them talked away as they neared the parking lot.
