So Mark did. There was a network on campus called "media center". It was a small building between the student center and the library, so everyone who used the cafeteria or the snack bar, or the post office or the library would connect to it. Mark created a network called "rnedia center" and opened it up to everyone, then shut down "media center" with a divide-by-zero hack. In one hour, he had access to 100 phones. Faculty too. He repeated this stunt two or three times. Then he went into cloud accounts and "backed up" everyone's photo library.
Mark felt himself getting warmer and warmer as he explained this. Sandy was really impressed. She fully understood what had happened.
"So what are you going to do now?" she asked.
"Go home. I guess. I've been kicked out of college."
"How would you like a job, and how would you like to get back in?"
Mark didn't know what to say to that. Sandy continued: "My dad is very rich. He works at a tech company. He's also on the board of this university. If he wrote a letter to the university, you'd get back in. All you have to do is work for me for three semesters."
"What would I do?"
"You'd work for the sorority. The official title is House Geek. You'd do what you were doing: hack into systems, get information. But you'd be doing it just for us, and you'd be doing it specifically to not get caught. And you'd also do anything else we asked. And I do mean anything. But you might find you'll really like the job."
Mark looked confused.
Sandy smiled. "Here's the thing Mark, I'm a firm believer that we all must use our gifts. What you did damaged me and my reputation, but it was what you were put on this planet to do. Tell me the truth: when you're doing this work, coming up with things like "rnedia", collecting usernames and passwords, don't you feel alive? Don't you feel like it's what you were supposed to do? I'm giving you the chance to do it. For me. For money, and for the privilege of living in a house with ten women,
"Trust me," she continued, "it beats community college, or working at Starbucks. In two years you start off as a freshman again. I might be able to get you some financial aid too. But you have to agree now."
Mark thought. He looked at Sandy's gorgeous body and felt all his negative feelings go away. "I'll do it."
