"That certainly reduces the field by quite a bit," said Dabbler. "A lot of my favorite characters are Avatars. Why leave them out?"
They represent real people, Roy reminded him. I don't want to turn this into a popularity contest where some people get miffed and others end up with overblown egos.
"I suppose not, but it's too bad, because my favorite character these days is probably DJ Woohoo, who's sort of, but not quite, the Avatar of Deja Voodoo. And Kiya, who once was, but now isn't, the Avatar of Zorlond would run a close second. But DJ gets the edge because writing her is spiced with danger -- Zorlond's okay with most of what people write Kiya into, but every time I cross the line with DJ I risk getting turned into a hedgehog..."
You don't listen to anything I say, do you, Dabbler?
"Of course I do, but I thought maybe I could get away with that because they're borderline cases."
No. Straight characters only, please. Didn't you once say Sid Russell's amazon wives Credensa and Sendula were your favorite characters?
"Yes, I have a lingering affection for them, mostly because I had such fun creating them and their original B-movie venue. But I have to admit they're one-note characters, nice, sure, but interchangable. If I had them to make all over again I'd take care to give them distinct personalities. I rather like their daughters Sensida and Cressida better, because they're much more rounded characters."
Yeah, in all the right ways...
"That's not what I meant! Actually, I like all the younger generation of the Russell and Jaeger clans -- Alvin and Anna as well as Sensida and Cressida. They seem to be a good grouping. I think it's a shame no one's used them as such since the end of the Anna's AddVenture thread -- maybe I'll do it some time."
But Sensida and Cressida are your favorites?
"It's hard to say. There are so many good characters. Like Adama's invisible girl, and Shackleton (as a villain), and Sebastian, who's such an idiot with his remote, and Elizabeth Fruitbat, and Marjorie Mandelberg (the Martian version), and the Old Wizard, and Elli..."
Elli? The sandwich maniac? Are you nuts? And she's an Avatar, too!
"Oh yeah, I forgot. But yeah, Elli too. Mind you, I don't approve of her original's effort to out-Herod Herod on the backlinking front, so to speak, but I do like the character that resulted. I had fun with that one..."
So Elli's your favorite? Roy's lips curled in distaste as he suggested it.
"Oh no, no way -- she's on the list, but nowhere near the top. Okay, Roy, you want a favorite? If I have to name one, it would have to be Deja Voodoo's Uncle Sid character. He's not being used as much as he once was, and some complain he's hard to write, but I like him. Besides, the whole Backstage, my favorite venue, was built around the guy. He'd get my vote if just for that."
Matter of taste, said Roy, neutrally. Well, enough of the past. Let's talk about the future.
"In order to do which, we have to revisit the past again, right?"
Right. You know the drill...
