Sharon wondered why none of her predecessors had thought of "short circuiting" the labyrinth by going across its roof. Or perhaps they had done exactly that, but had failed in their rescue attempt even so. They might have dodged the spirits that way, but on reaching the heart of the labyrinth they would have had to descend to ground level in order to rescue the prince. There, they would probably have encountered whoever (or whatever) was holding the prince hostage, an entity who was powerful enough to - she assumed - control the spirits that patrolled the labyrinth.
Sharon realised that she had now reached the point where, if she was going to reject the mission, she would have to do so. Even now, having built up the King's hopes, it would be hard to disappoint him.
