He tried to think through the last few moments to work out what on earth was going on. His realisation of his transformation had not been immediate.
In the moments before he had got up, in the blurry semi-dream state before full-awakeness, he was only vaguely aware of a curious feeling inside of himself. Struggling to rouse himself for the day ahead, he yawned, eyes closed, and was somewhat surprised by how high pitched his voice was.
There was a knock on the door and a woman's voice echoed through the room: "Are you ready yet? School starts in 15 minutes."
He was a little bemused by how odd his mother sounded, but not so much as to coax him out of bed. He turned on to his side, his body feeling even heavier than it normally did in the mornings, and blew at some long strands of hair that had slid over his face.
The knocking continued at the door: "If you want a lift I'm leaving in 5 minutes. I'm serious Magdalena."
"okay, okay, I'm coming," he protested. In the split second after he spoke several things happened. He noticed simultaneously that his mother had called him Magdalena, that he'd never had long hair, and that his voice was disturbingly high, disturbingly smooth, disturbingly... girl like
His eyes snapped open, and stared out on to his pillow through a veil of long dark hair that couldn't be his own. He brushed away the hair and found himself inspecting a delicate fingered little hand. Very slowly he moved his gaze downwards, at the rest of his body. His view was blocked by:
