Anakin and Qui-Gon Jinn were enjoying their twelfth year together as master and padawan. Ever since Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had destroyed Darth Maul, the galaxy had settled down considerably.
Even the taxation of outlying trade routes was no longer in dispute.
Obi-Wan had moved on, with his own padawan, one Jar-Jar Binks. Yes, he appeared to be too old to begin the training, but Yoda and Mace Windu had given Obi-Wan special permission to train the Gungan.
Anakin was now 18 years old, practically and adult. Soon he would face the Trials and become a full-fledged Jedi.
Qui-Gon was proud of Anakin, but he was still nervous. The Sith Lord was still out there, the Master who had sent Darth Maul to kill them.
They were relaxing at Dexxter Jettster's restaurant, in between missions for the Council, when Anakin asked Qui-Gon a question.
"Master Qui-Gon, what are Midi-Chlorians?"
Qui-Gon was silent for a moment, then said--
