1. "We expect to have a solution within a couple of days." This was greeted with general satisfaction.
2. *"We hope to have a solution within a few weeks." This provoked a good deal of angry muttering.
3. "It should take at worst a few months." This gave rise to furious protests.
4. "I'm afraid that I can't honestly give you a timescale. The problem has proved much more intractable than we had anticipated."
