34-year old Jane Wright opened the door to her apartment, headed straight for the living room, then collapsed onto the sofa. More than anything, she wanted to put this whole day behind her and just relax.
It was at that moment that there was a knock at the door. Groaning, she whispered "Go away." But the knocking continued. Did she think otherwise? Begrudgingly, she stood up, sighing, then headed to the door. She opened it, revealing a delivery man out in the hall. In his hands was a small cardboard box.
"Do I need to sign for that?" Jane asked.
"Nope," the man said, then he handed it to her. "Have a nice day," he said, before turning and heading back down the hall.
Taking the box back into her apartment, she shook it lightly, wondering what was inside. She checked the return address and it dawned on her what this was. It was her inheritance. A few weeks ago, her grandmother had died and as part of her will, Jane was to inherit her most valuable possession. Thinking it could be money or gold or jewels, she immediately tore open the box ... but all she found inside was a rock. Oh, it was a pretty rock, like pink quartz or something. But it wasn't valuable, at least from a visual standpoint. Although like many things, you can't judge a book by its cover.
"I wish I knew why Nana gave me this," she said, holding the rock in the palm of her hand.
Suddenly, knowledge poured into her mind. It was a wishing rock! Okay, now that's valuable.
Jane paused, thinking of all the possibilities. Then she made her next wish.
"I wish ..."
