"Come on," Rick said, taking Jim by the hand. "We'll pretend to dance while we search for the wand. I expect it fell out while I was dancing."

"I thought you said that you'd made eet zo only you could see eet," Jim said. [711792]

"Shit, yes. I'd forgotten that you won't be able to see it. But it'd look funny if I went onto the dance floor by myself, so come on."

But just then an alarm began wailing, accompanyed by a recorded announcement: "Please leave the building immediately by the nearest exit." At the same time the sprinkler system came on, drenching everyone.

The nearest teacher looked round for Mr Duggan to direct the evacuation but, not seeing him, decided that he had better take charge. "Come on everyone," he called. "There's no need to panic, but let's get out of here."

1. Jim and Rick can't avoid leaving with everyone else.
2. *Jim and Rick manage to stay behind without being noticed. Now that the hall is empty, searching is much easier.
3. As they make their way to the nearest fire exit, Lila stands on something that she can't see. She picks up what seems to be an invisible stick. How weird is that? "I wish I knew what the hell this is," she thinks.
