When Jan had finished on the phone, ordering "a pepperoni pizza - largest size that you sell", Jessica asked her: "Would you mind if I checked out your old apartment after we've finished eating?"
Jan raised her eyebrows. "Whatever for?"
"I thought that there was a slight chance that you might have kept a diary, then forgotten about it and left it behind, squirreled away somewhere."
"You don't give up, do you? I can assure you that I didn't. But I don't care if you search the place, as I know that I didn't leave anything of mine behind. Of course the apartment will almost certainly have a new tenant by now, and I very much doubt that they will be keen on letting you search the place. I'll write down the address for you on a scrap of paper, on the understanding that if you get into trouble it wasn't me that gave it to you. I don't have a key any more, of course. I imagine that it would have gone back to the landlord."
"Thanks." Jessica memorised the address, then put the piece of paper in her bag. If she was right that Jan had in reality only been moved at some point within the last three weeks, rather than four or five months ago, then she thought that there was a good chance that her old apartment would still be empty. Of course there was still the question of how she could get in.
After another ten minutes, their pizza was delivered. It was truly enormous. However they had no trouble in eating half each, this even though Jessica had already had a huge breakfast only some ninety minutes earlier.
