Jim laughed for a moment. "Forget you heard the noise, and that you and I spoke. Go back to your room and return to what you were doing." He watched her blink and walk out, then heard her door close and her chair slide on the floor. "She's going back to studying, I guess..."
His mind turned with the possibilities. Sharon? No, not first. Instead, he thought of Robin. She'd treated him like garbage all through school, and now that they were both seniors and over 18...
He went down and hopped in his car, then drove to school. The cheerleaders were practicing, so he watched them from someplace isolated--and watched unobserved--until they were done. Robin spoke to the others briefly, then headed for her car.
Jim made a bee-line after her, putting the yo-yo's string on his finger. He made a couple of practice moves with it, then approached Robin. "Hello there, Robin." He palmed the item, ready to use it.
The cheerleader turned, her face angry. "What do you want, jerk?"
Jim exposed the yo-yo, and flipped it at the ground. It hit the end of the string and rebounded up towards him. The pattern on the sides glowed and flashed, and he turned a bit so she could see it. Softly, he said, "'Jerk'? Is that any way to talk to me? Be respectful!"
She was watching the yo-yo now, her eyes wide, staring at the pattern as it went up and down. "Be respectful. Yes, sir." Her voice was a bit dreamy, and her eyes seemed glazed. Her focus was on the shiny toy that Jim was displaying. "What do you want, sir?"
