Someone standing outside the chess club room would have thought a silent grenade had gone off inside. A brilliant white light flooded from the single window in the doorway, blindlingly bright. After a few seconds, however, it faded away, and everything returned to normal.
Inside, the girls were frozen in place, each one completely blinded by the dictaphone's disintegration.
"Is-- is everyone OK?" Cassidy's voice quavered out.
"I think so..." Queen said from behind the table she was hiding under.
One by one, the girls sounded off that they were alive and in one piece, and came out back to the middle of the room, blinking afterimages from their eyes.
"It's gone..." Chelsea said, staring at the spot where the dictaphone had fallen.
Winter scratched the top of her head. "Yeah, but did something change? Something feels different. What about you, Ms. Macy? What do you think?"
Ms. Macy, the chess club's sponsor, shrugged. "I guess that's a lesson in hubris for us, girls. Don't play around with forces you don't understand. How about we cut club short today after all this excitement?"
The four members of the chess club nodded, gathered their things, and headed out. As the door closed, Macy chuckled. "Thankfully, all those forces are now with someone who can be responsible." She wiggled her fingers and an apple appeared on her desk.
