Wanting to find the "lady of the house", Howard decided to go to the left. This road took him behind the barn and gradually down about thirty feet to a low lying area. Ahead and to the right was a house, sitting at the bottom of the slope. To the left was a forested area, with the line of trees that made up its edge heading off at an angle. He pulled up in front of the house and stopped the car. The Rambler's door announced his presence with a loud creaking noise as he opened it, and again as it shut.
Howard saw no activity, and it was quiet enough that he could hear a creek running somewhere through the adjacent woods. The cool, relaxing sound called to him as a relief from the heat. He noticed a small footpath leading into the trees, and was sorely tempted to follow it. After some thought, he decided to
