"I can't go on smoking these," said Sharon. "At this rate, I'd get through at least one pack a day, and there's no way I could afford that. I'm going to try to quit, and if I can't I'll just have to switch to another brand." Jim relayed her words to the man, who replied: "I think she may change her mind. In case she does, I'll ring again in three hours' time."

Sharon couldn't quite bring herself to throw the remaining cigarettes away, but she put the pack on top of the wardrobe to make it as inaccessible as possible. Now if she wanted a cigarette, she couldn't take one almost without knowing it.

It was a Saturday, and Sharon and Jim planned to spend the day where they were, at Sharon's. Half an hour later, Sharon found she had a strong craving for another cigarette. "I've only got two left," she told Jim. "It can't hurt to smoke those." In another half an hour, she had smoked both those.

Before long the craving returned. She decided to go to the local store and buy a couple of packets of ordinary cigarettes. Then she frowned, as she realised that finding a suitable top to cover over her expanded breasts would be a problem. In the end, she sent Jim, with instructions to buy some bras and tops in her new size, in addition to the cigarettes.

Jim took far longer than Sharon had expected, and she began to worry that something had happened to him. Also the craving had got very strong; she felt very on edge. Eventually:

  1. *Jim returned.
  2. *The man phoned again. The price had gone up to $70 dollars a pack, or ten packs for $500.
  3. Sharon decided to put on her stretchiest sweater, with a raincoat over the top, and go looking for Jim.
