The mist began to pool in front of the treasure chest, becoming thicker and palpable. The fog began to rise up taking shape, it wasn't long before a shadowy quadruped loomed before our heroes. The mist monster looked similar to the twilight beasts that link had fought previously, but this was more feral looking, with a face more akin to a wolfos shrouded in darkness. Sporting a set of huge claws on each hand the monster lunged forth.
Claw clashed against steel as Midna barely managed to release her sword from it's scabbard in time to deflect the beast's talons. The mist creature leapt back as Midna stumbled forwards, dragged down by the weight of the Ordon Sword. While Midna had learned the basics of swordsmanship in the past, she was no where near as practiced as Link had been. This was only exacerbated by the fact that Link's old sword was quite a bit to large and heavy for Midna to comfortably wield in her petit Hylian form. Using both of her hand to hold the blade steady, Midna moved into something resembling a defensive stance.
"Be careful Midna," Link shouted from behind, "It's fast, but it doesn't seem very strong. Just parry it's attacks and counter before it can jump away."
While Link was unable to provide any physical assistance, hoping her newfound analytical abilities could make up for it. Midna nodded in response. she could feel her whole body shaking in anticipation of the creature's next strike. Adrenaline rushes were a new thing for the former twili, and not one she was particularly fond of. It felt like in addition to the battle being waged against this mist monster, she was also fighting back against her own body. Midna was abruptly torn from these thoughts as the beast lunged once more It's claws raked through the air towards Midna's torso, The world seemed to turn to slow motion as she swung the blade downwards in effort of pushing back the razor sharp nails. Her strike hit true as the blade crashed into the dirt along with the monster's hand. "Counter attack now!" Link cried and Midna attempted to pull back the sword to cut through the cheats of the beast. Unfortunately, Midna's strength had worn thin after the blocking the first three blows, her muscles spamming as she tried to bring her sword back up and swing the blade back into the monster.
A feeling of overwhelming helplessness paralyzed the Twilight Princess as the creature slashed through her stomach with it's free hand. Midna screamed as she clutched her body and fell to the cave floor. She could nearly hear Link cry out has searing pain lanced through her body.
Link watched as the monster let out a bloodcurdling screech and dispersed back into mist. The smog surged around Link and through the tiny cave exit behind her. Link ignored the monster's disappearance and darted over to her fallen friend.
Link quickly attempted to stop the bleeding, but quickly noticed that there was no bleeding to be stopped. Midna appeared to be sleeping, likely passed out from the sudden pain, with no wounds apparent on her body. While seemed that the monster had merely caused her great pain, but had left her physically fine. Link was incredibly relieved by this revelation. As Midna's breathing calmed and her shaking subsided, Link's mind turned to the creature that had escape from the cave, "What in Din's name was that thing?" Link thought aloud.
She got up from Midna's side, unable to carry her out of the cave, as Link still had no idea how to control most of his Twili imp powers, though even if she could traversing the cramped tunnel while carrying Midna would be impossible. Link decided the best, and only, course of action was to continue her investigation of the cave until Midna awoke from her slumber. Link floated over to the treasure chest from which the smog had emerged. some slight traces of mist still lingered in the air around it. Link hoped that no more mist monsters would jump out at her, as she once again looked inside the small wooden container. On close inspection she noticed that there were small runes inscribed along the upper rim of the box's interior. As link curved her head to look at them she saw that the runes were not the regular Hylian alphabet she had learned growing up. She could see many similarities between the languages, Link surmised that this could be written in some much older from of Hylian, but nevertheless the inscription was unintelligible to the hero.
Links thoughts wandered back to the mist creature, what could it have been? By opening that chest had she accidentally unleashed something upon Hyrule and in the process make herself unable to do anything to stop it? Did the creature have anything to do with the Twilight Realm, it had some similar attributes to the Twilight Beasts she had been fighting against, but it was also quite different. Link was torn from thought when she heard Midna stirring.
Midna groaned as she slowly sat up from the ground, still holding her soar stomach, "Are you alright?" Link asked, concerned.
"I'm just peachy, thanks," Midna replied, clearly irritable from her encounter, "What happened after I passed out?"
"The thing just disappeared, and then all the mist rushed out of the cave." Link explained, "Do you have any idea what that thing was?"
"I've never seen something like that before," Midna replied, her face clearly showing her worry.
Midna slowly got to her feet, slightly unstable from her defeat, she stumbled over to the treasure chest. Link pointed out the runes within and Midna took her own shot at deciphering them.
"I've seen old Hylian similar to this before, but these don't make any sense. This chest must be old, incredibly old. We need to find someone who can tell us what this says. If that rock had the power to change our bodies like this and then summoned a monster like that, then we may have just added another evil force to the list of things threatening Hyrule." Midna advised her companion.
