In the garage they found everything ready for their reception. About forty so-called blockboats with ferrets awaited us. These vehicles are made of hollow tree trunks, and those who are not used to it lose their balance and bang over or even overturn the boat. But two such boats, fastened to each other, are all the safer, and that's why they took care of that. So we were soon ready for departure. About five and twenty boats were occupied by the sons alone, the others took the bitches with their mains. The lake was over a mile long and half a mile wide, and in most places only two to three feet deep, but had marshy bottom. Larger and smaller pipes and reed-covered islands seemed to float on its surface. Some of them covered an area of several hundred steps. They were the seat of an innumerable number of fathers of all kinds.
