“…Anyways, keep working on that focus chant,” Anna was saying, as she and Darla walked down the hallway towards their respective suites. “If you can manage to keep it going in the back of your head, it’ll help you a lot, even in everyday things.” She gestured to the tome Darla was carrying. “And remember; be ready to try out the first two spells in that, next time…”
The two had just left Groblek’s, after he had returned and finished their business regarding his library of magical books. Darla had no ability for the more intuitive magics, fireballs from thin air and the like. That sort of spell-casting required an internal power source she simply didn’t have. However, Darla had turned out to have a true knack for the ritualistic magics. As she was fond of saying, chanting ‘hocus pocus abracadabra’ over a bubbling kettle wasn’t a whole lot different from chanting ‘molecular covalent bonding’ over a bubbling beaker. “I’ll try. Thanks again for teaching me this stuff. Mom and Dad tried to teach me some magic, but…”
“They’re sorcerers, not witches,” Anna surmised. “Whole different perspective. Though I have to admit, I’m kinda learning this stuff too…” Both stopped suddenly, as, ahead of them, a door open and shut rapidly, almost too fast to allow the body exiting to pass. Glancing at each other, the two started walking again, a bit more hurried this time. “Mom? What’s going on?”
Kiya turned quickly, the surprise on her face (and something else..?) flickering into a smile. “Oh, hi girls! How’s the studying coming along?” Giving a somewhat exaggerated wave of greeting with one hand, the other slipped behind her and rapidly tapped the door in a specific pattern and sequence…
Anna frowned. “Okay, now what the hell’s with the cover-up? Don’t tell me you two are trying out some experiment in the living room again.”
“Uh…” Kiya’s smile faltered, and then returned. “Yeah, actually, your dad’s working on something. In private, kind of thing. It’s really shaky at the moment and he just needs some time to work on it. Alone. Kindathing. So, Darla, picked up anything new? How about a little demonstration?” As Kiya stepped forward and tried to sweep the two in her arms (and firmly away from the suite door), Anna did spin on one foot and smoothly stepped past her mother and reached for the doorknob…
