Elsewhere, suite 2662…

Dabbler had gotten up to answer the knocking at the door. Moments later, Gidget was rapidly heading to the door as well, drawn by a loud bang and Dabbler’s garbled cursing. Arriving, she found Dabbler hopping around holding an injured foot and generally (and loudly) swearing at the large slab of stone on the floor that had previously been leaning against the other side of the door.

Anna rattled the doorknob for only a few seconds. “Okay, why’d you lock the door for me?” Unlike some doors into Author suites, the door for #2282 didn’t have a visible lock. It simply knew who was allowed to pass and who wasn’t. Up until just now, it had always let Anna through when she wanted.

“Like I said,” Kiya answered, remaining calm. “Your father needs some privacy, let’s just let him have that, ok?”

Darla, momentarily forgotten, quietly tried the doorknob as well. It was locked for her as well. “What’s going on? What’s he doing in there?” Darla’s face showed growing concern over the issue. “Why are you acting so weird?”

Anna scowled. “Enough with the run-around, already!” With that she turned towards the camera... RGH! NO!

Anna reeled as her will was pushed back into her self. “What the hell?”

Not gonna happen! No way! No how! I’m willing to fight you tooth and nail on this, lady! So unless you’re really desperate to throw us both in the funny farm, just listen to your mother and LEAVE! ME! ALONE!

As each of the last words resounded in their minds, a new and no less locked door slammed shut over top of the original. Steel sliding door, prison bars, and last, an iron portcullis.

The three just stared at the symbol of raging isolationism in stunned silence. It was broken half a minute later as Anna looked at Kiya once again, the question burning in her eyes. Abandoning the pretense of cheerfulness, Kiya still attempted to turn everyone away from the situation. “Look, we can just use this time to spend some time together. Just us girls, you know? This should be done by tomorrow…”

“What the hell’s wrong with you?!” Anna practically yelled. “You gone Stepford or something?!” The tirade might have continued if Anna hadn’t felt Darla’s hand on her arm, and seen the look on Darla’s face. Immediately, Anna stopped herself, pulled her emotions back under control. Only once calm again did she approach the matter one more time. “Alright Mom, no dodging the question now. No cover-up. What is going on?”

“Um…” Kiya wavered…

That’s when Darla spoke up, clearly. “Mom…”

  1. *“… you’re bleeding!”
