Meghan stretched, showing off her flat tummy, and noticed that several of the boys on the school bus were checking her out as she did. She looked at one and he quickly turned away. She tried to stifle a giggle but failed and turned to look out the window. I'm such a tease, she said to herself, a little smug. Her hair, now a light brown with lighter streaks was pulled up in a messy bun, with a few strands hanging around her head in little curls. It was a seemingly simple style that had actually taken her almost an hour. She had never taken so long with her hair before, she knew that, but this morning it had seemed the most important thing in the world to her and she was surprised when she looked at the clock to see the time. A few seats behind her, Meredith looked on with a blank expression. Her face was red and blotchy like she had been crying a lot.
"What's wrong with you!" she had shouted. "Why can't you talk about something that's important?"
There was a silence as several people in the mall turned to look at Meredith, and Meghan smiled condescendingly. "I only talk about important things with people important to me." Then things had gone from bad to worse for Meredith, as Meghan told her how boring she was, how tired she was that Meredith always talked about the same things, how she never was interested in cool stuff like clothes, or shoes. Finally, she said that as far as she was concerned, Meredith should keep to her place and Meghan would keep to hers, as part of the squad. Then Meghan had gone over to the other girls who were watching and they all turned to giggle at Meredith. The girl was humiliated and had gone home crying.
"You look a little down," a voice said behind her. She turned and saw a slightly older boy, perhaps 17, looking at her. He was on the tall side at about 6 feet, with blue-black hair, and tattoos on either side of his neck, the one on the right was a bull, the one on the left a ram. He walked over and stood next to Meredith, who was about as emabarassed as could be at this obviously good-looking upperclassman who was talking to her. "In fact, you look like someone hurt you," the boy continued.
"Ah... um, yeah," Meredith addmitted.
"Thought so," the boy replied. Then he smiled. "You know, if someone hurt you, the best way to feel better is to hurt them back." There was something hypnotizing in his smile, and Meredith felt herself answering with one herself.
"I'm Meredith Edwards," she introduced herself. She felt a sense of trust towards the boy.
"Pleased to meet you, I'm Jason Asp," the other boy responded. "If you're having trouble thinking of ways to get a little revenge, then don't worry. I've had to get a little vengeance now and then." He placed a hand on her shoulder, and Meredith shivered a bit. Then he laughed and walked into the school saying over his shoulder, "Don't worry, if you need help I'll show up."
