“Medically there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re in perfect health miss”
Miss. There it was. Unmistakable. Plain as day. The doctor had called Sam, miss. Sam knew it was coming too.
There was no denying it. The face that Sam had seen in the mirror that morning was familiar. But it was also a girl’s face. His, but...a girl’s.
“Miss?”
“Oh sorry, it’s nothing? Guess my symptoms were psychosomatic or something. Thanks for your time doctor”
“Wait, It says here you’ve been on antidepressants in the past. Are you currently taking any medication of this kind?”
“...No. I, don’t think I need it right now”
The doctor scrawled his illegible signature down on a piece of paper.
“Fair enough” He ripped the paper free and handed it to Sam. “Take this just in case you feel you need it. Take care, miss. And take it easy”
Sam smiled “Thank you doctor. I will”
On their way out of the clinic, Sam crossed paths with the cheerful receptionist. There was a question that needed answering.
Seeing that there was no one else present. Sam walked right up and said “Do I look like a girl?”
This had come as something of a shock to the poor receptionist. Who mostly just answered phones, scheduled appointments and collected a paycheck. She responded before long. Not wanting to be insensitive.
“Do you, want to look like a girl?” A fair response. Sam’s face was turning bright red as they considered a response.
“...Yes” She responded with a blush and a smile. “I think I do”

Sam, Short for Samantha. Had a problem. Her closet was totally filled with men’s clothes. And that just wouldn’t do. In fact, her whole look was long overdue for a total overhaul. Something really girly. Just to shake the cobwebs out of her brain. It felt like she’d been on autopilot for way, way too long.
To that end. She had implored Carlotta to take her shopping. An invitation which her roommate had accepted with gusto. It was only her second or third favourite thing in the fucking world.
First up was a proper bra fitting. Which she was in dire need of.
“Looks like you’re a C-cup” the clerk had told her.
Not bad! That was only size down from D.
Sam exited the store with a handful of supportive undergarments in a fabulous array of colours. Including some frilly, pink things. Which Carlotta insisted would be perfect for date night.
Next, the main event. They popped into a bougie looking clothing store that catered exclusively to young women with more money than sense. Everything was overpriced and a little tacky. But you only lived once, so they went absolutely overboard. Filling piles of shopping bags with fun, flirty tops. Cute dresses, sexy shoes. The works.
Sam could hardly wait to throw her old clothes in the trash. And so she’d elected to wear something very daring out of the store. An extremelylow cut white dress that exposed much of her newfound cleavage. With a pair of beige leggings that terminated before they met the hem of the dress. Revealing the thickest part of her thighs to the world.
And of course it was all brought together by a kicky little pair of red heels. Which Sam was forced to move very slowly and carefully in. It turned out to be much harder them it looked to navigate the world in these things.
“Girl, that is a look” Carlotta approved. The whole outfit had mostly been her idea anyway.
“Thanks!” Sam chirped. Everyone in her life seemed to be oblivious to the change. Which made everything so much easier. Her social media, all of her old photos. It had all altered to match Samatha’s new identity. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Whatever was happening, it was wonderful. Perfect as is. Sam reasoned that she too might forget that she had ever been a man named Samuel. But if that had to happen then she didn’t mind at all. She was exactly who she wanted to be but never had the guts to realize. And that suited her just fine.
It all seemed too good to be true. Even as she enjoyed the amaxing thing that had happened to her, Sam waited for the other shoe to fall.
“Oooh! Ooh!” Carlotta was bursting with excitement again. They had happened accross a cute little salon in the mall. “Sam, Sam! You should go blonde”
Sam tilted her head back and forth in an expression of mock consideration. Which drove Carlotta crazy. “Hmm…? Should I?”
“Yes girl! It’s totally your aesthetic. Just embrace it!”
An hour later, Sam emerged with a bleach blonde bob. Complete with super duper cute bangs. And a whole bag of makeup and haircare products.
Finally satisfied that their shopping spree had been successfully concluded. The pair made their way back to the comfort of their apartment where they could collapse from exhaustion after a long day.

“Aaand done!”
“How do I look?”
“Like a fucking babe”
“Let me see!”
Carlotta had outdone herself on Sam’s makeup. It was a very soft pink look with a brilliant shock of blue eyeliner that made everything pop. Sam was nearly moved to tears when she saw herself in the mirror.
“It’s perfect. Thank you, Carlotta!”
“Aww! You’re emotional as fuck today. How come?”
Sam smiled just a bit as she sat up and started placing her new makeup set back in the box where it belonged.
“...Well, This is probably going to sound funny. But I think I used to be scared to be a girl. Like, I dunno. Like I thought it was bad or something. I know that’s stupid”
Carlotta reached out and place a reassuring hand on Sam’s shoulder. “No, it’s fine. It’s scary sometimes”
“Thanks, Carlotta. You’re a good friend”
“True, true. Oooh, here’s an idea! Since we’re so deep in our feelings today. Let’s get drunk and watch shitty romantic movies. I’ll invite some of my girlfriends. We’ll make a whole thing out of it”
Sam smiled broadly. “That sounds like a lot of fun”
“Yesss! I love having a female roommate! Every night is girls night!”
As Carlotta began busily texting her friends. Sam stood up and walked over to the small balcony on the edge of the apartment. She took in a deep, crisp breath of fresh air. It was such a beautiful day. The city sprawled out before her. The flawless blue sky hung overhead. It was the kind of day that made life seem so easy. Like the future could be a million years away for all she cared because the now was so tangible and wonderful.
It was going to be a good day. And for perhaps the first time, Sam concluded. A good life too.
