“I’ll have the angel and devil’s food cakes,” Akane decided. She picked up the box and peered through the plastic covering. There were two small cakes within, seperated from each other by being within their own internal boxes. One cake was a clear white and circular with a hole in the middle. It looked incredibly light in texture, but she didn’t really know what else to expect of it. Akane had never really seen a cake quite like it before. The other cake was a stark contrast, black as the night’s sky from the thick chocolate icing covering the top. While both cakes looked positively delicious there was something about this one that instilled a strong compulsion to tear the box open and just take the tiniest of tastes here and now, go on, what would be the harm in it...?

No, no, no, these cakes were for later on. For her, Yuki, Sayura, Ukyo and that idiot outside. It was a small mercy that both cakes had already been divided into five equal pieces, with a small paper partition seperating each of them.

“Thank you,” Akane said with a cheery smile to the saleswoman as she paid the surprisingly small asking price. Quite the bargain, it turns out! Now she just had to go and contend with her fiance, who had apparently taken to following her around like a lost puppy.

What she did not notice was the saleswoman breathe a heavy sigh of relief, and nor did she hear her mumble “That’s the last of that lot gone... Good luck, young miss!”

Ranma paced up and down the street, occasionally peeking at the various shops he passed. Something about this place was setting him on edge. He didn’t like it here. Not safe. Can’t tell why. It was really the second part that was worrying him, as it indicated that he’d subconsciously noticed something he was not yet consciously aware of, something that was making him more than a little bit tense. Well. If anything did try to happen to him, they’d have hell to pay. And if anything happened to Akane, they’d wish they had hell to pay.

He continued pacing, varying things up so as not to wear a hole in the pavement. Or seem predictable to whatever the danger might well be. Well, whatever it was just let it try to get the drop on him. Whatever it was, he’d be ready for it in a moment’s notice. He’d be ready, and then he’d -

“Fancy meeting you here,” a familiar voice said, just as a strong grip tugged his ponytail down to street level. Ranma stared up at Akane’s upside down face for half a second before planting his hands on the ground and cartwheeling to stand upright next to her, face to face. “Showoff,” Akane rolled her eyes, but he could tell she was dead impressed. She was just good at hiding it. Really, she was.

“Hey, what’s this?” Ranma asked, effortlessly twirling the box Akane was holding out of her grip and into his own. “Looks tasty! Guess we know who didn’t make it, right?”

“Ranma!” Akane grabbed for the box, only for him to keep it just barely out of reach. “That’s for later! Remember our study group?”

He nodded to acknowledge that he did, when that was in fact a rather blatant lie. He’d completely forgotten about that until this very moment. It was just one of those things that happened: Akane had set it up with her friends, then their fathers had suggested that he could certainly use all the help he could get for his grades (come on, they’re not that bad!), and then Ukyo had found out and insisted that since they were all in the same class anyway then she ought to be part of the group as well, and then they all agreed it really would be for the best if nobody else found out because then all hell would break loose. Besides which, they’d have to move to the dojo to fit that many people in. Akane’s room would be crowded enough as it was.

Akane took advantage of his moment of distraction, managing to simultaneously elbow him in the ribs and seize back the two cakes in the same movement. “You probably shouldn’t have any of this devil’s food cake,” Akane quipped, “Because you’re bad enough as it is!”

“Like you’re such an angel yourself!” Ranma indignantly yelled, joining Akane as the two of them walked off home. “Pretty sure angel isn’t a synonym for ‘violent uncute tomboy’!”

“Nor is it a synonym for ‘loudmouth perverted idiot’!” Akane yelled back. “And what were you doing following me anyway?”

“Hey, it wasn’t my idea! You know what our idiot dads are like!”

“Hi guys!” both of them stopped at the sound of that particular voice, and turned around to face Ukyo. Who as a matter of interest was smiling like a loon, quite obviously deriving a great deal of enjoyment out of their argument. “Ready for the study group lat-mf!”

Both of them hushed her, Ranma even covering her mouth with his hand. “You never know,” Akane whispered. “Anyone could overhear you if you’re not careful!” Ukyo nodded in understanding, prompting Ranma to uncover her mouth.

“So, what’s with the cakes?”

“Angel and devil’s food cakes,” Ranma explained. “Akane bought them, so don’t worry.”

Ukyo sighed in heavy relief. Akane scowled at her and Ranma both. Especially when Ukyo grabbed him by the arm, and said “Say Ranma, why don’t we hang out later on? Just the two of us! It’s been a while since we had the chance to really talk, you know?”

And all the while, in the box in Akane arms, an as yet unknown power began to pulse. It fed on it all. Envy. Lust. Wrath. Pride. Greed. All three were feeding at least one of these emotions, and before long all three would find themselves subject to the powerful spells that were baked into one or even both of these two seemingly innocent cakes...

  1. *Skip to the study meeting.
  2. The trio encounter someone on their way.
  3. Someone else heads into the sweet shop
  4. Temptation proves too much, anda slice of cake is sneaked off before the study group begins..
