Most people who knew her were unaware, but Rei was a clone. As such there were many to go around, all in standby deep inside NERV.
Ritsuko slid her card through the reader, entering the door to one of her private lab sections. It was here she had secreted one of her latest experiments. Occasionally there was something wrong with one of the clones and it was unusable. Sometimes, though, a failed clone had something worth studying.
"How are we doing today?" Ritsuko asked, holding down the intercom button. It was a moot question.
Inside the observation area, the twenty foot tall copy of Rei Ayanami turned from the television monitor to look at Ritsuko. Out of all the clones, they also had one soul between them and it was currently in use. The Rei here only had a very basic personality, but Ritsuko found she was able to learn basic skills, though she never talked. When the scientist didn't do anything else that warranted attention, Rei turned back to the TV. She would always watch whatever was displayed on it, as if she craved the stimulation.
"What shall we do today?" Ritsuko mused to herself. She had a few ideas to test, but hadn't tried them yet as they were a little extreme. She felt now was the time for something new and daring.
