Um, a little point to I'd like to make...
"To her perception, a mares place was two paces behind her stallion." This is not how horses operate (and the MLP crew are ponies first, talking ponies second). The alpha male is actually all the way at the back of the herd, making sure all the fillies and colts are sticking with the group (and getting an eyefull of mare flank). The alpha female is the one in the lead, and the herd follows her. The alpha male is also far more expendable, and predators are likely to go for the rear-most target.
If you think about it, this is likely the reason why Equestria is ruled by princesses, and why we haven't seen even one male alicorn on the show yet. Sorry if this is 'too geeky for porn', but I like details.
Yeah, but you also have to think that this is a submissive thing, too. It's in the Idol's description. So it's not as much about nature, which could be pretty far removed as Humans can be from apes.
