(Regarding Akane and cooking, I’ve never understood why many writers assume that simply because she seems to able to make only one dish successfully in the manga that she’ll never be able to cook properly and should just stop trying permanently. Would they ever tell an actual person just to give up on learning a basic life skill like that? I doubt it. But I digress.)
Well, if anyone has a right to not think much of Akane's cooking it's Ukyo, who saw three of her customers taken out by Akane's food when she cooked at her store while Ukyo was sick. (And curries are actually hard to get wrong, which was probably part of the manga authors joke - the spices hide a lot of sins.)
Well, of course Ukyo is in a fair position to criticize. But that’s not really what I was saying. I was talking about stories where the author accepts as a given that Akane simply sucks as a cook and should just give up because she’ll never not suck at it. I find that rather bizarre.
As for curry being hard to get wrong… I’m a pretty competent cook, and it still requires a fair amount of effort and attention. There are a lot of ways it can go wrong even if you use one of those curry spice squares that look like chocolate bars as your base. You still have to make sure the vegetables are fully cooked, not to mention the meat (if you’re using any). And yes, you can screw up rice even with a rice cooker. But that’s neither here nor there.
Most importantly, I wasn’t actually saying anything about this episode directly. It was totally fine. I was just making a general comment that was inspired by the episode. That’s why I put it in parentheses.
Also, now I want curry.
