At first one may think it a bit odd, heavens knows many students did, that Shinobu was actually fairly good friends with Lum. “Didn’t she steal your boyfriend?” they’d ask. Which was honestly kind of annoying, what did they expect to see catfights? She was still friends with Ataru too, even if she didn’t (strongly at least, old echos sometimes pop up when his better side briefly flashes out) particularly want to date him anymore.

Lum was just a likable girl once you got to know her, if a little weird but honestly Shinobu wondered how much of said weirdness was from not actually being human. Today, the two were eating lunch and Lum was positively giddy. She was giggling, floating in the air, munching down her lunchbox with glee. “So, what’s got you so excited?”

“Darling!” Lum cheered. Oh? Ataru had done something right. “He noticed my new perfume!”

Wait, perfume? Shinobu had noticed the scent on Lum. It honestly smelled like somebody had spilled hot sauce and motor oil on her at once. “Oh so that’s what that is…” She said politely.

“Yes Darling’s not the most… observant of people most of the time. He’ll usually miss things like that.” A sigh, she tugged at her uniform, “I’d say he stares down my chest too much but he usually does that only with other girls.”

Right, Ataru was in his own way observant. He just used his powers mostly to spot T&A rather than anything else. “He did notice my new style.” She said, brushing her curls.

“Oh yeah those look great!” Lum said, “You think Darling would like it if I curled my hair… Hmm… I’d have to head off to get them curled, would take a day or two…”

“Wait why’d you have to leave? We could just go to a salon.” Shinobu said.

“Oh Oni need special hair curlers, got to get them up to 1000 Degrees to get the hair right.” Lum said. “I don’t think human hair can stand that…”

No! It couldn’t! Honestly her head would probably burst into flames from just getting near such curlers! Yet another reminder that while she looked like an ordinary and cute human girl Lum's physiology was anything but human. In all honesty it was a miracle they hadn't accidentally poisoned her with something benign, like flour or salt.

“Do you think he’d notice it?” Lum asked.

“Who knows. Maybe he was just testing out some new pickup technique.” Shinobu said with a shrug, “He did immediately jump back to talking about my figure.”

“Darling never talks about my figure.” A pout.

Sensing a bad “Darling never notices me” mood coming along, Shinobu gave her the once over and sighed. Most girls would kill to have a body like that. Most guys would kill to hold a body like that. Why Ataru was stuck with this weird pride fueled thing with pretending not to even notice Lum when Shinobu saw him staring at her more often than not when Lum wasn’t paying attention was beyond her.

Perhaps that was the main reason she didn’t have any hard feelings with Lum over her ex, because A) she saw that Ataru deep down did care about her. And B) better Lum than any human girl.

Ah, another fine day in the life of Shutaro Mendou. The sun was shining, the weather was good, and even though his dear Lum was not by his side yet, he found himself enjoying the company of two fair young ladies over lunch. They giggled at all the right times and truly appreciated the company of a brilliant man like himself. Now if only-

“Afternoon ladies!”

If only reprobates like Ataru Moroboshi weren’t allowed on school grounds!If it were up to Shutaro then he would have a law passed that would make it illegal to be Ataru Moroboshi, but alas his father had warned him that the 'bribing officials' budget wouldn't extend that far even for his family.

Still, at least the two girls looked appropriately annoyed by his presence. “What do you want Moroboshi?” One of them asked.

“What? Can’t a guy say hello to his classmates?” Ataru asked.

“As if you just want to say hello to our fair fellow students, no, I know all too well your sickening lust Moroboshi!”

Ataru gave him a narrow eyed stare, “Oy, you even know the names of these ‘classmates’ you chatting up?”

“Excuse me! Of course I do! I know the names of every student in our school, let alone class!” Shutaro snapped, “These two are… are…” he snapped his fingers, closed his eyes, and brushed back a bit of hair. “Of course ladies, Hanako and Kasumi right?”

The girls stared blankly at him.

“Those two transferred out a month ago.” Ataru said, “Their names are Mizuki and Kyoko.” He pointed to the two girls, who were now glaring at him. What? Glaring at him? When Ataru Moroboshi was right there!? “Mizuki, Kyoko, maybe you shouldn’t hang out with a guy just interested in some eye candy?”

“You say that like you’re not just trying to hit on us.” Kyoko said.

“Well said Kyoko.” Shutaro said. “He’s a deviant-”

“I’m Mizuki.” ~~Kyoko~~ Mizuki said.

“Hey, I just like complimenting girls and spending time with them. I want people to have fun.” Ataru said, giving the two girls a smile that almost looked winning!

To his surprise, a faint hint of a blush formed on the shorter girl… that was Kyoko right? “Come on, let’s just leave these boys along and have lunch by ourselves.” She said, taking her friends arm and heading out to the courtyard.

“Hmmm… wow that worked well. I think I’m reaching the end of quick leveling though.” Ataru mused.

"Aha! I knew it! You're up to something, aren't you?" Shutaro shouted, getting up in Ataru’s face.

“Excuse me? What the hell makes you think I’m ‘up to something?”

“You’re breathing, for one thing!” Shutaro’s fists clenched with rage. Not only was this fool standing in the way of his dear Lum, but now even innocent maidens for some simple company like… like Akane and Ibuki! (Yes he had already forgotten their names.). “Enough of this, heaven will strike you down!”

Ataru groaned, but then his eyes widened for a moment, and he reached for something under his shirt… and then caught Shutaro’s blade between his hands! Again! How does he keep doing this. He pulled back and swung down again! And again! “Why. Won’t. You. Fall!?”

Ting.

By now the classmates watching had gasped.

Ataru had caught the blade between two fingers. Even he looked shocked by it.

“Wow, that was pretty impressive.” One male student commented.

“Well, Mendo does try and hit him with that all the time, I guess Moroboshi got good at grabbing it.” A female student said.

With a flick of the wrist, Ataru pulled the sword out of the stunned Shutaro’s hands and caught it expertly. “Well I am pretty good with my hands.” He said with a grin. To Shutaro’s disgust a few female classmates actually looked mildly intrigued.

“Oh wow Darling, you look almost cool!” Lum floated into the classroom, Shinobu trailing behind her.

“Almost?” Ataru turned to the two girls and gave them a winning smile. “Hahaha, me? Cool? That’s silly, I’m just some chump, thanks for the support though.”

Lum’s eyes sparkled and her face erupted into a smile. “Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!” He was smiling at her like that! Like he was so happy to see her!

Shinobu watched the alien girl cartwheel in the air, which was quite a risky move while wearing a skirt. Wow, Ataru was turning on the charm today, it reminded her of-

“How was lunch?” Ataru asked, right next to her and pulling her desk chair out for her. Wow, how gentlemanly. She sat down in her seat, Ataru’s hand brushing against her arm as she did so. But to Shinobu’s complete surprise he didn’t try and turn that into a hug! He just sat down! Which was weird! Abnormal! She stared after him for a good while longer than she'd intended to, trying to puzzle out what was going on with him all of a sudden.

Ataru grabbed Lum by the foot mid-cartwheel and tugged her down, “Hey class is starting!”

“Right right!” Lum said, wrapping him into a hug before flying off to her seat. Which Ataru made absolutely no attempt to duck or squirm out of. Nor did he go the other extreme, trying to grope Lum's body or anything like that!

As the teacher came in, a thought drifted through Shinobu’s head.

Is Ataru… actually being a little charming?

Ataru Moroboshi Sword-Catching Skill: 45

Huh, well that explained it. According to the manual a skill hitting the 50s was often the peak of “Normal Ability.” So that weirdo Mendo had swung that metal stick at him so much he was really good at catching swords. Plus he had felt the buzzing from a lot of level ups earlier. Of course, such a weirdly specific skill wasn’t that useful, but who knows? Making sure to keep the Level Upper hidden behind a textbook, he flipped the dial back to his main objective.

Ataru Moroboshi Flirting Skill: 14

Not bad! He could see the results coming in. Girls didn’t seem to be reacting so negatively to his attention… In hindsight immediately going for asking for their phone numbers and comments on their figure was, perhaps, not the best way to flirt. Sure, he was still getting turned down, but they weren’t pummeling him for it! Baby steps, baby steps. It was better going than he'd ever had it, so he wasn't even feeling the creeping impatience that he'd normally have by now.

He tucked away the Level Upper and looked back up at the surrounding class. Lum glanced back at him, he waved at her and she cheerfully waved back, earning a reprimand from the teacher. Shinobu sighed at the antics, so Ataru smiled and shrugged in her direction. In response Shinobu sat up straighter and looked ahead.

Well that was interesting. Lum and Shinobu seemed a fair bit more receptive (OK Lum a lot more) to his attentions. Since Ataru, despite what some may say, can put two and two together he realized that was because Lum was obsessed with him and Shinobu had liked him that way once. With that in mind he set them as “baseline” for later flirting attempts. When he could get other girls to react like Shinobu… and Shinobu herself to react like Lum he’d be set for the short term and could work on other Harem skills!

Now, Ataru didn’t think about how Lum would react to his higher level Flirting, which was definitely a mistake in the long term.
