Living in the school was a little weird. On the bright side, it meant that there was little to no chance of her being late. Her classroom was a five minute walk from her home.

“Son! Wake up son! You’re going to be late!”

Now if only her idiot father realized that. “I’m sleepin’ here!” She uppercutted him up into the air.

Then came the fights, the washing of faces, the fights, the brushing of teeth, and the fights. She made sure to put on her earring. The best part of waking up in her opinion. “Oy, where’s my uniform?” Her boys uniform, she was still stuck with that. Unless her old man wanted her to go to school in her pajamas. Wouldn't put it past him to try that as some sick punishment.
“Worry about that later my boy!” Her father said, holding up a bowl of miso soup. “How about you have some breakfast first huh?”

Well that was new. Usually her old man ate all the breakfast and Ryuunosuke had to get by with whatever rice she could scrape out of the cooker.

“Here we go son, your uniform, tailored just to your size.” He said in the middle of her breakfast. OK now she was really suspicious. She picked up the men’s shirt, sighed, and unfolded it.

“MAN” Was written in a black thick font on the back.

“You enjoy fucking with me!?” She shouted, standing up and getting ready to give the old man another thrashing! She took a step forward, when suddenly her legs stopped being able to move.

“Hah! You’re a hundred years too early son! You fell for the old ‘Paralysis Drugs in Breakfast’ trick!”

“What kind of psycho drugs their k1ds breakfast!” Ryuunosuke shouted, forcing herself to stand up. “You’ll guh… pay old man!”

Down the halls of the school early this morning walked a cute girl. Plenty of those, of course, but this one stood out. Her small size, well placed curves, and pink curly hair made one think of a doll. There was an almost inhuman quality to her beauty. Which was fitting, as Ran was in fact not human. She was an alien, known to none but the other alien in their school and Ataru.

Despite her looks Ran was something of a vindictive soul. One could hardly blame her. After everything Lum had put her through, all the little torments adding up over time. Then stealing away the handsome god among men Rei and dumping him for some Earth loser! Ooh, it got her steamed! Though she could hardly blame Lum for everything much though she'd like to. Her upbringing had been fairly bad, even in Ran’s opinion. Her mother would beat her for everything that wasn’t her fault. Like the time Lum wet the bed. Or the time Lum scribbled on the wall. Or the time Lum ate the pie her mother had prepared.

Ok maybe she could blame Lum for everything alongside her psychotic mother. Honestly! Ran had a hard time thinking of anybody who could have a worse relationship with a worse parent. Luckily for the world, Ran wasn’t thinking too hard about Lum, parents, and revenge. It was only taking up 25% of her brainpower at the moment, downright low compared to normal. Right now, she was ringing the bell at the school store. She needed a new eraser. For once this minor obstacle had absolutely nothing to do with Lum.

“Hello? Anybody here?” She rang the bell again.

Then the side door to the store flew open, and a boy stumbled out. “Grahhhgg stupid old man!” He growled, clearly having difficulty walking. He collapsed on the other side of the hallway. “Seriously? Paralyzing drugs in breakfast!?”

“Are you OK?” Ran walked over to the boy. For some reason he had “MAN” written on the back of his uniform. She kneeled down next to him, “Oh dear, you’re bleeding!”

The boy looked up into Ran’s eyes, and her heart skipped a beat.

Oh my… he’s almost as handsome as Rei. His strong jaw, clenched in a manly attempt to subdue pain. A bandage covering his cheek. Piercing, determined eyes staring straight into hers. A cut on his forehead dripping some blood which somehow added to the strong, masculine look. A single gleaming earring on his right ear glitter and caught her eye, it seemed to frame his face in a halo. Comparing him to Rei was high praise, Ran had never done that before with any other man. Nor would she again by the time that earring was done with her. Not even Rei himself. Not that he’d particularly be concerned about that.

“H-here!” She pulled out a lace handkerchief, embroidered with her name. “D-do you need to go to the nurses office?” She dabbed his forehead. “You OK?”

“I’m fine. Just got caught off guard… stupid paralysis poison…” He forced himself to stand up, “Err, you need anything?”

“J-just an eraser…” She glanced away from him. “Err…”

“Here.” He reached into his pocket and dropped a fresh eraser into her hand. “I got plenty of those, we run that store.”

Ran clutched it to her chest, her heart beating strangely fast. “T-thank you!” Then the bell signaling class was about to start ran.

“Sorry, gotta go to class now.” He stood up, walking off to class.

Ran looked down at the eraser he had given her. It has “MAN” written on it for some reason in the same font as his shirt had written on the back.

Wow, this handkerchief smelled nice. Actually, thinking about it, that girl had smelled nice too. Her name was probably Ran, if the embroidering on the handkerchief was accurate. She was pretty girly, huh? Easily one of the girliest girls Ryuunosuke had ever seen. “Wonder if I’ll get to meet her again…”

“Meet her again!?” Two voices behind her said at once. Ryuunosuke turned around to see Ataru and Mendo leaning over her shoulder.

“Oy, what’re you two doing?” She asked.

“I’ve been thinking about how to get you a proper feminine uniform!” Mendo declared, “Though I must admit it does my heart good to see you beginning to express your femininity with a handkerchief!”

“Oh it ain’t mine.” Ryuunosuke said, “It’s some other chicks, I think Ran…?”

“Ran?” Ataru said, “She gave you that!?”

“...wait do you know her?” Ryuunosuke stood up.

“Oh yeah! Ran’s an old friend of ours right Darling!” Lum said.

They knew this Ran chick!? Maybe.. Maybe if she spent time with Ran she could learn how to be as cute and feminine as her! “What’s her phone number? Address!? Locker Number!?”

Lum frowned, “Wait, you want to spend time with Ran? Are you sure?"
The other girls in the classroom began to whisper excitedly. Whatever it was Ryuunosuke couldn't make out, but she got the general sense that they wanted to see her spend time with Ran too.

“I gotta, a girl like her…” Ryuunosuke looked out the window wistfully.

The class gasped. "S-So that's the kind of girl we should try to be?" One girl said.

Ryuunosuke internally nodded. Yes. That’s the ideal woman. So cute, feminine, gentle looking.

Every girl bar Lum and Shinobu squealed. “Ran’s her type!”

“Well of course she is! Look at Ran and compare her to Ryuunosuke! It’s a Yin and Yang thing!”

“Now wait a minute!” Mendo declared, sheathed sword held up in the air. “Let’s not get hasty here. I’m sure that Miss Ryuunosuke here is only interested in a platonic friendship between women!”

“L-Lum! Could you at least point me to Ran’s locker!” Ryuunosuke was stuffing a scribbled note into an envelope.

“That’s… is that a love letter!”

One girl swooned, and Ataru was right there to catch her. Lum zapped him for that. “I suppose I could tell you.” Lum said.

Ran opened her locker and saw a plain envelope sitting atop her shoes. “Oh brother.” Another love letter? Honestly what were any of these boys thinking? Like any of them could even remotely compare to Rei.
Well, OK, there had been that boy this morning. But that was still second place, obviously. She flipped open the note. It was written in fairly rough handwriting.

Ran,

I want to get to ~~learn everything about~~ get to know you.
Could we meet up sometime?
Also I need to return something to you.

Class 2-4? Why, wasn't that Lum and Darling's class? Ohohoho, why just this one time she could make an exception surely. Decline the invitation in person. Laugh at whatever loser thought she’d date anybody even remotely associated with Lum!

Off to Lum’s classroom she went, skipping gaily through the corridor. Ready to enjoy the adulation and following abject disappointment on that loser's face! Speaking of losers, look who was floating up ahead of her. “Oh Lum! I got a weird letter!”

“Huh?” Lum looked down, “Oh Ran! What kind of weird letter.”

Ran grinned, “Oh, just a note from one of your classmates, know anything about that?”

“Oh yeah, you got Ryuunosuke’s letter then?” Lum said.

So this was someone Lum knew personally! Well then, this was probably some kind of prank then! Clearly Lum was going to try and set up Ran with some hideous ogre (and not the alien kind) and have a good laugh. “Well could you introduce me?” Ran asked sweetly, she was going to enjoy this now.

“Sure, Ryuunosuke’s still in class. Doesn’t want to head home yet.” Lum floated ahead, “Oh Ryuunosuke! Ran got your letter!”

Ran put on her best cute face. ’Oh I’m sorry, I’d never date anybody over then my dear Rei!’ She’d say, and then she show him a picture, and laugh internally as he realized how outclassed he was and-

“Oh, Ran, there you are. I was hoping you’d get my note.” Ran found herself looking into the handsome eyes of that boy from this morning.

“Y-you?” Ran squeaked out. It seemed the scratches from this morning had mostly healed, bar the one cut on his forehead which she had helped with.

“Yeah, me. I’m Ryuunosuke Fujinami, nice to meet ya.” He bowed a bit to her, holding out what Ran recognized as her handkerchief in his hands. “Here, thanks for lending it to me. I cleaned it first of course.”

“T-that’s no problem!” Ran took the handkerchief, face suddenly reddening. What was this!? This boy was… was interested in her! Sh-she had to turn him down gently! She couldn’t break the heart of someone like him!

“So would you like to, I dunno, go out for a bit this Saturday. I think there’s a lot I can learn about you.” Ryuunosuke said.

“A date! Ran’s being asked out on a date!” One girl from Lum’s class squealed.

“Hold back Mendo! Keep Moroboshi from taking pictures!” Another girl said.

“L-let me go this instant ladies!”

"No, no! Don't let me go!"

“I… I…” Ran swallowed nervously. She had never felt this tempted before! But no, she couldn’t betray Rei! Even if Ryuunosuke's face, framed perfectly by the light reflected off his earring, looked so handsome. Even if his smoldering, many gaze was locked into her eyes! “I guess I- um-”

“Ran, can I talk to do you for a second?” Lum grabbed Ran’s elbow, “Be right back Ryuunosuke!” Ran flew through the air into a nearby Ladies Room.

“What do you think you’re doing!?” Ran shouted, “That was between me and Ryuunosuke!”

Lum laughed nervously, “No worries Ran! I just wanted to make sure you didn’t get the wrong idea. I don’t think Ryuunosuke's asking you out on a date.”

Ohoho? What was this? Lum trying to interfere, keep her from going on a date with a hunky boy from her class?! That set Ran a-thinking: What was Darling always going on about? A harem of sexy girls! What if Lum was the flip side of that coin, the greedy (sexy) bitch! “What makes you think that?” She asked, looking down at her nails.

“Because Ryuunosuke’s a girl.” Lum answered. There was silence. Ran processed Lum’s ‘reason.’ Really took it in. Applied it to everything she knew and thought she knew.

Then she started laughing. “Oh. My. God. That is the worst excuse ever! You didn’t think I’d actually believe such bull?”

“It’s true! Her dad makes her dress up as a bo-”

“Please Lum. I’m not blind. Ryuunosuke is a prime example of manhood. Just look at him!” She sighed dramatically. She really did want to give him another good look. Maybe shirtless, with some oil. “I get it. You’re getting greedy, I bet you regret dumping Rei right about now too huh? Well guess what! I’m not letting you get whatever hunky harem you want!”

“..what?” Lum asked, sounding baffled. “Ran what are you- wait come back!”

“Sorry about that Ryu!” Ran popped back out of the restroom. She grabbed Ryuunosuke’s hands. “I’d love to go out with you this Saturday. Around ten sound good?”
Ryuunosuke’s face sprouted such a cute smile! “Y-yeah that sounds great!”

“I’ll be sure to dress up nicely.” She winked at her future date. Just one date, to put Lum in her place. Not like she was cheating on Rei or anything! He wouldn’t mind. A quick cupcake and all would be forgotten.

“Y-you’ll wear some real cute feminine outfit for me!?” Ryuunosuke looked like Ran had just promised her a mountain of gold. Oh this poor boy! She thought back to his state this morning, complaining about his parent… He must be so starved for affection! Well, Ran could give him some. Just a little.

Lum peered out of the restroom, scowling. “Just what is Ran planning for that poor girl!?” She whispered to herself. Not even realizing the emotion bubbling up within her was closer to jealousy and envy than concern.
