"Oh. My. God," Julie inhaled dramatically. "How long have you been a member of this sorority?"
"Six weeks as a full member," Becca mumbled, not making eye contact with the curvy senior. "And six months as a pledge before that."
"And what does our president expect you to buy when she sends you out for refreshments?"
"Alcohol," Becca said, her voice barely audible.
"And what, exactly, is all of this?" Julie said through clenched teeth, gesturing at the wagon Becca pulled behind her. A grocery bag containing chips and pretzels balanced stop two cases of off-brand soda.
Becca looked like she was ready to break down in tears. "I'm sorry! There was a sign on the package store saying they were closed for the week. And it's Sunday, so the grocery store wasn't selling beer, and..."
"I have half a mind to make you drive to Canada...." Julie began, quivering with rage. She had to admit it was kind of a turn-on to watch Becca cower.
"Easy, Jules," Maggie said, strolling over from poolside. She was already wearing her favorite yellow bikini and a pink wrap around her hips. "She did her best. We should have plenty of booze left over from the graduation party, and the guys always bring a bottle or four. Though we gave you enough money for better soda, Becs."
Grateful for the intervention, Becca straightened up. "This soda was really expensive," she said. "The clerk said it was artisanal, whatever that means. He did throw in a pack of mints for free, though." She showed a nondescript white box to the sorority president.
"Also off-brand," Julie said, rolling her eyes.
"Jules, why don't you go find Min and tell her to help Becca set up? Becs? The guys will be here in three hours. You know what this place needs to look like. Think you can handle it?"
"You got it, boss." Becca set to work, thinking that if it weren't for Maggie and Min, she would have moved to the dorms months ago.
