Perhaps Sharon's senses had been heightened as part of her changes. She had heard Alice's approach some seconds before Heather had done so, and now some sixth sense enabled her to detect a loose floorboard. Using her long fingernails (Heather wondered if they had grown along with her hair or if they had always been long), she prised up the board. In the cavity beneath it was a scrap of paper. Sharon picked it up, and looked at it uncomprehendingly. It seemed that the new Sharon did not even know what paper was, never mind being able to read.
Heather gently took it from her. She saw that there was writing on it.
