Just before the three of them could make it through, the portal collapsed.

"Quick! Open it again!" Sharon yelled.

Karen ran over to the wall panel, and tried inputting some information.

Nothing happened.

"I can't reach the other Alt!" She yelled back.

"Try a different one!" Jim urgently suggested.

Karen tried accessing another Alt, and then another, and still more.

Finally, she resigned herself to the truth.

"I can't access any of them."

"Could they all have collapsed?" Sharon asked.

"Not likely." Karen said. "I think that it's more likely it's happened to this one."

"Then why are we still here?" Jim asked.

"It was only a theory that the Alts collapse." Karen explained. "It seems that they merely become disconnected from the other Alts."

"So, what are we going to do in this Alt?"

"Nothing. The UNA base here contained the only life at all on the planet."

There was an awkward silence.

  1. *They began searching the base, looking for anyone else to be trapped in this Alt.
  2. And thus began the saga of experimentation, with hopes of inventing a way out.
